On December 1, the Russian military broke through Ukrainian defenses to the north of the city of Kostiantynivka and expanded its control to the south of the city of Krasny Liman in Donetsk.

The Yug [South] Group of Forces broke through Ukrainian defenses to the north of Kostiantynivka and captured Klinovoye, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The settlement is located just four kilometers to the east of the main road leading to the northern entrance of the city.

Before advancing towards the key road, the Yug Group of Forces will likely work to expand their control around Klinovoye. Bezim’yane, Popasne and Virolyubivka, all located to the south and southeast of the settlement, will likely come under attack soon.

This breakthrough to the north of Kostiantynivka came as Ukrainian defenses were under increasing pressure from the south.

Last month, the Yug Group of Forces secured all of Ivanopillya and expanded its control up to the southern entrance of the city.

A power attack from the south coupled with blocking the route leading to Kramatorsk, a key logistics hub for Kiev forces, from the north could lead to the complete collapse of Ukrainian defenses in Kostiantynivka. The battle could go on for a few more months, but the end result seems in favor of Russia.

To the northeast in Donetsk, a very similar situation is developing around Krasny Liman, where the Zapad [West] Group of Forces has been expanding its control to the south of the city.

According to recent reports, the Zapad Group of Forces captured most of the eastern part of Dibrova, securing more than 2,4 square kilometers. Russian troops also advanced in the eastern outskirts of Krasny Liman, capturing at least 12,8 square kilometers.

The capture of Dibrova would be catastrophic for Kiev forces not only because it would solidify the Zapad Group of Forces near the southern entrance of Krasny Liman, but also because it would enable an attack directly on the road linking Krasny liman with Raihorodok, another logistics hub of Kiev forces, to the west.

Kiev forces have been fighting fiercely around Krasny Liman. Yet, they continue to lose territory. With Ukraine incapable of allocating any more meaningful resources to the battle in the city, the result will likely be a Russian victory within a few months.

The failure in Kostiantynivka and Krasny Liman is a direct result of Ukraine’s attempt to fight to the end in every single direction in the face of the Russian military who has much more resources, especially when it comes to manpower. Still, Kiev will not likely move away from this strategy as defensive maneuvers, which usually include calculated withdrawals, would harm support from the West, especially the United States.
