On the afternoon of December 21, Ukrainian forces attempted a missile attack on the Crimean peninsula. Russian air defense forces intercepted a Ukrainian missile over the Sea of Azov.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Armed Forces of Ukraine attempted an attack at about 3 p.m. local time. The target of the strike was likely the Crimean Bridge or any facilities in the city of Kerch.
The Russian military did not reveal the type of the missile. According to the governor of the Kherson region, Russian air defense systems shot down an ATACMS missile which was flying towards the Crimean Bridge. The deployment of ATACMS missiles by the Ukrainian military could reveal some secret deliveries to Ukraine. According to the official reports, Kiev received only a couple of dozen missiles of the very first modification MGM-140A Block 1 with a range of only 165 km and a cluster warhead. However, the range of these missiles is not enough to reach targets in the eastern part of the peninsula. In an attempt to hit the Crimean Bridge, the AFU should use the MGM-140B Block 1A modification with a range of up to 300 km.
It should not be ruled out that more advanced missiles were secretly delivered to Kiev forces. However, any official reports by the Russian military are yet to confirm the type of the intercepted missile. Highly likely, Ukrainian forces used the modified S-200 missiles, which the AFU have already used for the attacks in the Russian rear areas. In early December, Russian air defense forces also shot down two S-200 anti-aircraft missiles converted by Ukrainians to attack ground targets over the Sea of Azov.

Traditionally, today’s attack was supported by NATO reconnaissance means deployed in the Black Sea region. Before the Ukrainian missile strike, a Boeing P-8 Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft of the US Navy was spotted off the Black Sea coast in Romania. Immediately after Ukrainian missile was destroyed, the aircraft headed deep into Romanian territory. At the same time, Bombardier Challenger 650, reconnaissance and target designation aircraft, was spotted operating in Romania; and another NATO Boeing E-3A Sentry, a long—range radar detection and control aircraft, was being transported to Turkey.
