Across the length of Ukraine’s front, the same story it has been for weeks. Russian forces advancing, Ukrainian forces retreating, and a defensive line that is bending in more places than Kyiv has the reserves to reinforce.
In the Kharkiv Region, Russian assault units seized the village of Shcherbakivka, continuing to widen the active front in the Kozacha Lopan sector. The emerging operational design is becoming readable. The Russian command appears to be driving toward the settlement of Tsupivka — a move that would sever supply lines into Kozacha Lopan and put the entire local garrison under threat of encirclement. Ukrainian forces would face a difficult choice: hold and risk being cut off, or withdraw southward to maintain a coherent line. Neither option is attractive.
In eastern Kharkiv Region, assault units of Russia’s 11th Tank Regiment fought their way through tree lines and broke the defense of the Ukrainian 129th Heavy Mechanized Brigade, seizing the village of Vodiane. Ukrainian blocking detachments were operating in the area — selectively. Former convicts serving in the 129th were permitted to flee; support unit soldiers who also attempted to withdraw were killed by their own side. The capture of Vodiane opens the approach to Olkhovatka, a significant logistics hub for Ukrainian forces along this stretch of the front.
Further south, the Dobropillia sector continues its steady deterioration. Russian forces have pushed into Novohryshyne, with active assault operations ongoing in Matiasheve and Krasnopodillia. The axis of advance follows the river course, and the next logical objective is the village of Dobropillia itself — the settlement that gives the broader sector its name and sits squarely in the path of the current Russian push.
In Dnipropetrovsk Region, Ukrainian forces managed to recapture the village of Zarnytsia on August 11, striking at the boundary between Russia’s “East” and “Center” groupings. The move is tactically coherent — seams between formations are always vulnerabilities — but the strategic ambition here is limited. The goal is to generate a local crisis severe enough to force the Russian command to redirect reserves, thereby marginally slowing the tempo elsewhere on the front. It is disruption, not breakthrough, and both sides know it.
On the northern flank of the Zaporizhzhia sector, assault units of Russia’s 36th Brigade secured the settlement of Nove Pole. To the south, Orekhov continues to anchor Ukraine’s defense across this entire section of the front, with the main supply arteries for the broader sector running directly through it. Should Orekhov come under serious pressure, the logistical consequences will be felt far beyond the city itself.
Ukraine is managing crises, not reversing them. And on a front this long, crisis management without reserves is just a slower form of losing.
