Canada will provide CA$200 million [$144 million] to co-finance the joint production of advanced drones with Ukraine, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced this during a media briefing from Kiev.

“We had a discussion today about specifying and targeting that assistance where it will have the greatest impact, and we will do so… We’re proud to be the first non-European nation to participate in NATO’s PURL program, the package of the most urgently needed military assistance that will be delivered here next month,” Carney said.

The PURL program, or the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, is a new NATO mechanism meant to secure critical supplies, often from United States stockpiles, for rapid delivery to the Kiev forces on the front lines.

Carney also stated that Canada will significantly invest in Ukraine’s defense production capabilities, without going into details.

“We’ll also fund over [CA]$200 million for the joint production of defense materials in our two countries, particularly advanced drones using Canadian suppliers. And another [CA]$165 million [$119 million] for critical multilateral efforts, including, again, enhancing drone resources, as well as more money for humanitarian assistance to support civilians affected by this horrific war,” he added.

Another CA$835 million [$600 million] will go towards providing Ukraine with critical equipment such as armored vehicles, medical equipment, spare parts, small arms, ammunition and explosives, plus additional drone capabilities, according to the prime minister’s office.

In total, the Canadian military assistance package to Ukraine will be valued at CA$2 billion [$1.46 billion]. With the latest announcement, Canada has committed nearly CA$22 billion [CA$15,9 billion] in multi-faceted assistance for Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian special military operation there more than three years ago.

While details are scarce, there is a high possibility that new assistance package will contribute to the manufacturing of long-range suicide drone Ukraine deploys against Russia on a regular basis.
