A United Arab Emirates senior official denied to The Jerusalem Post on March 8 that the country was involved in a strike against an Iranian war desalination facility.
The Post said the official hinted that the UAE would not strike a civilian target to enter the war against the Islamic Republic, which the United States and Israel started last week, but would target a military site.
Initially, The Post reported that the UAE struck an Iranian water desalination facility, in what would have been its first attack against the Islamic Republic.
The UAE took the brunt of Iranian retaliatory attacks over the past week. Just after the report was published by The Post, the official Emirate News Agency (WAM) said that Emirate air defenses detected 17 ballistic missiles, of which 16 were destroyed, while one missile fell into the sea. The news agency added that a total of 117 suicide drones were also detected, with 113 intercepted, while four drones fell within the country’s territory.
Since the start of the war, 238 ballistic missiles, eight cruise missiles, and 1,422 suicide drones have been launched at the UAE from Iran, according to WAM.
Separately during the day, the UAE Defense Ministry announced that the death toll from Iran’s attacks had risen to four. A man was killed as a result of an attack that targeted Dubai Marina overnight. The 23 Marina tower was hit.
A day earlier, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that its naval forces carried out overnight a massive attack on Al Dhafra Air Base near the Emirate capital, Abu Dhabi.
Al Dhafra is considered critical for the operations of the U.S. military in the Middle East. It hosts advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance aircraft. A satellite image released by MizarVision revealed serious damage at the air base, with several hangars wiped out.

Also on March 7, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused the United States earlier in the day of attacking a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island.
The reported strike marked UAE’s first offensive participation in the war, and joins a similar report from last week, in which a senior western diplomatic source told The Post that Qatar carried out strikes inside Iran over the past 24 hours in retaliation to recent Iranian drone and missile attacks. Qatar has since denied launching any strikes inside the Islamic Republic.
A Wall Street Journal report from March 6 said that the UAE is considering freezing billions of dollars’ worth of assets belonging to Iran in a bid to pressure the Islamic Republic.
Later on the same day, the President of the UAE said that his country was at a time of war but was well and told his enemies it was no easy prey.
“The UAE has thick skin and bitter flesh – we are no easy prey,” Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is also ruler of Abu Dhabi, said in comments, made while visiting those injured in strikes, aired on Abu Dhabi TV on March 7.
Even if The Post’s latest report ended up being false, the UAE will likely end up joining the war within a few days, not just because of Iran’s repeated attacks, but also because of pressure from the U.S., which will soon need to use its bases there in a more direct manner.
