The United States has begun withdrawing hundreds of troops from northeastern Syria, The New York Times reported on April 17.
Two senior U.S. officials told the newspaper that the U.S. military was closing three of its eight small operating bases in the region, reducing troop levels to about 1,400 from 2,000.
The bases in questions are Mission Support Site Green Village, Mission Support Site Euphrates and a third much smaller facility. The first base is located in a large oil field known as al-Omar, while the second is located within the Conoco gas facility. Both are located in the governorate of Deir Ezzor. The location of the third base is still unknown.
Videos posted to social media showed large U.S. military convoys leaving al-Omar and Conoco in the direction of the Iraqi autonomous region of Kurdistan.
American commanders will assess after 60 days whether to make additional cuts, the officials said to The New York Times, with one of them noting that commanders had recommended keeping at least 500 U.S. troops in Syria.
Remaining U.S. troops, which include conventional soldiers as well as special forces, will continue to provide counterterrorism assistance to the allied Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and help operate several detention camps, according to the officials.
Between 9,000 and 10,000 ISIS fighters and about 39,000 of their family members are detained by the SDF in northeastern Syria.
The administration of the former U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed the fall of the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad and was quick to engage with the new Islamist-led interim government.
Nevertheless, the administration of President Donald Trump adopted a more cautious approach towards the country’s new rulers.
The U.S. worked with Russia early last March to pass a statement in the United Nations Security Council condemning a government crackdown on the Syrian coast that claimed the lives of more than 1,600 civilians, mostly members of the Alawite religious minority.
At around the same time, the U.S. helped broker an agreement between the SDF and the interim government to integrate the group into state institutions.
Later in March, it was reported that the U.S. gave the interim government a list of conditions to fulfill in exchange for partial sanctions relief. The condition included granting the U.S. military the freedom to act against terrorist threats in the country, cracking down on radicals and expelling Palestinian factions, according to a report released by The Washington Post on April 18.
Earlier this week, the Ynet news website reported that Israel was working to convince the Trump administration to limit the withdrawal from Syria, fearing that the move will increase Turkey’s “appetite” to control the country.
All in all, the Trump administration is yet to adopt a clear policy with regard to Syria. There is no doubt however that the interests of Israel in the country will remain a priority for Washington.

actually the great russian offensive in syria began only after trump got elected, in february 2017, before that it was very difficult for the russians to advance, so trump’s decisions at that time helped a lot in liverating syria from hts and other usraeli assets.
