The United States has withdrawn troops from two key bases at al-Omar oil fields and the Conoco gas plant in the eastern Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, Al-Arabia TV and other Arab media sources reported on May 3.
“On Friday [May 2], American troops left the oil fields using dozens of trucks that arrived from Iraqi Kurdistan. The trucks transported military equipment, heavy weapons and were escorted by the Office of Civil Affairs of the International Coalition,” the Saudi-owned news channel said in a report.
The London-based New Arab said that U.S. troops have completely left Conoco, but some 50 are still deployed at al-Omar base, known as the Green Village.
Video footage posted to social networks showed dozens of trucks loaded with U.S. military equipment and heavy weapons leaving Deir Ezzor.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s Al-Jazeera TV said, citing sources with knowledge on the matter, that U.S. troops that left Deir Ezzor will be redeployed at two bases in the northeastern governorate of al-Hasakah, Qasrak and al-Shaddadi.
The Pentagon confirmed on April 18 that the U.S. was going to consolidate and reduce its forces in Syria, maintaining fewer than one thousand troops under the command of the anti-ISIS coalition.
“This consolidation reflects significant steps we have made toward degrading ISIS’ appeal and operational capability regionally and globally,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement at the time. “As this consolidation takes place, consistent with President Trump’s commitment to peace through strength, U.S. Central Command will remain poised to continue strikes against the remnants of ISIS in Syria.”
Approximately 2,000 U.S. troops were stationed in Syria as of last December, up from the roughly 900 troops in the country before the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the subsequent surge of attacks by Iran-backed armed factions on U.S. forces in the Middle East.
The Pentagon said that the consolidation will reposition remaining troops to “select locations in Syria,” and result in the withdrawal of roughly 1,000 U.S. troops from the country.
The administration of the former U.S. President Joe Biden welcomed the fall of the regime of former president Bashar al-Assad and was quick to engage with the new Islamist-led interim government. However, the administration of President Donald Trump adopted a more cautious approach towards the country’s new rulers.
While the U.S. appears to be serious about leaving Deir Ezzor, it continues to reinforce its bases from al-Haskaah to the governorates of Raqqa and Aleppo in the north of Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based monitoring group.
In addition, the U.S. maintains a garrison in the strategic southeastern area of al-Tanf on a key highway linking the Syrian capital, Damascus, with Baghdad, the capital of neighboring Iraq. Recent reports even revealed that the U.S.-backed forces were even expanding their operations closer to the capital.

the filth had no business being there in the first place, another mistake russia made in syria was not bombing them.
the stolen syrian oil that is smuggled through syria has been a funding vehicle for anti assad syria operations . who will steal the oil now ? some other contracted group will keep the theft going . but us troops are sitting ducks if they attack iran .
they should be sitting ducks whether they attack iran or not.
usa defeated assad and his entire army—including his russian allies—with only a few hundred troops!!!
