U.S. To Dismantle At Tanf Base In Exchange For Iranian Withdrawal From Southern Syria: Media

The US is considering to close down its military base at the Syria-Iraq border in exchange for Iranian withdrawal from southern Syria, the Saudi-owned Asharq Al-Awsat reported on June 3.

According to the report, the proposition was brought up by US Secretary of State aide David Satterfield in a meeting with Russian, Jordanian and Turkish officials in the framework of negotiations of a deal on the situation in southern Syria.

On June 2, Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said that Damascus will not approve any agreement on southern Syria until US forces withdraw from their base in the border area of At Tanf.

On the same day, Israeli media reported citing an senior Israeli official denied reports that the sides have reached a deal on withdrawal of Iranian forces from southern Syria. According to this report, Israel still wants all Iranian and Iranian-backed forces to leave Syria.

On June 3, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani denied reports on talks between Iran and Israel on the conflict in Syria. However, he did not deny that some kind of a deal over the situation in Syria could be negotiated.

Let them rot in Tanf. They have lost their utility. Israel might have planned something else for them

Smaug

I’m going to guess, that since Iran/Hezbollah already left south Syria, that this possible deal has to do with a permanent Iranian withdrawal? Otherwise this article makes no sense.

as

Why so scared of Iranian anyway ?

FlorianGeyer

All that will happen I suspect is that Israels demand that Iranian advisers and allied groups will withdraw from the Israeli,Jordanian border and that this gives the US a rationale to leave Al Tanf , where only US pride and hubris was chaining them to.

Ace

I think they want the sand. It’s some kind of strategic plan.

HardHawk

dont worry. An explanatory one is following up, for the ones who dont have more than 2 second thinking span. Wait for it.

FlorianGeyer

Smaug is part of the ‘ I wannit NOW ‘ generation of people I think HardHawk :)

NO is a poster recruited as thoussands have from usrael embassies and post every where. Like serious is and many others here. Some of them also post in greek sites using the same language and same signautres as for example XD at the end of every sentense.

Subconsious is their downfall as they all post based on scripting given to them never use their single cell. If you notice also they never stay on subject but always misinform and trying to create a negative reaction. You know the technic of the jew that screams for help while is trying to kill you always predenting to be the victim? Watch the hasbara trlls here and understand them dont excuse them there is no excuse for this people.

FlorianGeyer

You are correct I think. They have a narrative script to follow.

The Jew blood sucking baby rapers are the ones raised from birth to lie. Their evil cult should be outlawed and Israel and Jews eliminated from the middle east. It’s the primary source of most of the problems there.

HardHawk

Only there? agree of the rest.

potcracker2588

ty,,, spot on…….eliminated from middle east…….how about from our planet

RichardD

Yes, I agree completely. The UN should conduct a human rights investigation of Jew mass pedophile rape that can be included in a UNSC resolution for delisting Israel from the UN and replacing it with Palestine. To help with dejudifying the planet to create a Jew free world.

Joe Dirt

Go fuck a goat you muzzy bastard! :D

You have no rational argument, because you’re an idiot.

This quite a good depiction of current USG or now called ZOG interest.

FlorianGeyer

Where will the US relocate their terror gangs and families at AlTanf to I wonder ?

HardHawk

you took the words out of my mouth no need to double post the info. Good one.

FlorianGeyer

Philippines and Indonesia as well perhaps? Even China ?

HardHawk

they already deploy them in Philipines, few years ago.

East-Northern Syria, moderate rebels gather here for dollar paid army jobs.
Iraqi Kurdistan is also a possibility, US is building more bases in Iraq and experienced people needed.

They will need them in Jordan in a few months.

Minutes ago, a powerful explosion was reported from the area around the Abu Dhuhour Military Airport in the eastern countryside of the Idlib Governorate.

Pro-opposition activists are reporting that the explosion was due to an sraeli airstrike on an Iranian ammunition depot; however, this is still unverified.

Carol Davidek-Waller

So Tanf has always been a tactical blundee. It’s indefensible. Now that local tribes have banded together against US and French occupation forces, the US has no bargaining power. They will leave in exchange for nothing.

Bill Wilson

Tactical blunder? It’s quite a strategic location for blocking vehicle traffic along the border road and the small highway into central Syria. Those two are the only roads inside a huge area and were major supply routes for ISIS before the US built bases there. That forced ISIS and the smugglers to take a long detour to the north around the Palmyra region or if they were daring, thru the rocky desert and ruin their tires. Don’t have to worry about local tribes either since few if any live in that desolate region nor about defending it since the terrain is flat as a pancake with no cover for attacking forces.

MichaH

There is not much to add to Bill Wilson.

The media had reported a hundred of times that the US is planing to/ is actually going to leave al-Tanf, but they are still there, and why should they leave?

The US never just leaves a territory they grabbed and occupied.

Bob

The US occupied territory at al-Tanf base is useless without any occupied militant pockets around Damascus – any newly trained mercenaries have no destination points for systematic armed opposition to the Syrian state. Hence, the US are attempting to bargain their exit, from an unsustainable occupation, with an alternative form of strategic gain.

Dhil Gill

The idea was, I believe, to create a buffer state between Iraq and Syria – effectively using the planned statelet as a ‘wall’.

I wonder if there’s a link between the recent raft of US States legalising cannabis, and this policy position . . . ?

Bob

Lol

S Melanson

Iran has stated it will not take part in South Syrian operation and has no military assets in Southern Syria, meaning they have already withdrawn. Syria says there are no Iranian troops in Syria, only advisors. Syria demands US withdraw from Al Tanf before any agreement for Iranian withdrawel from Southern Syria.

Ok. So Syria demands the US abandon Al Tanf for agreement to withdrawel of the non-existent Iranian troops that have already withdrawn from Southern Syria.

Also, the oil sharing agreement between YPG and Syria is apparently 100 barrels of oil for 75 barrels of fuel. WTF?

Can someone help me here?

DaBoiiiii

If you tell someone something, and they don’t listen you get tired of repeating yourself, especially if you can get a good deal from it.

For example, Iranian nukes. “We don’t have nukes”, “yes u do have all da nukes” “we arent making nukes” “yes u r u r making all da nukes” ” yh yh were making nukes, well stop it and reduce refinement, just get rid of the sanctions and give us trade guarantees ” lol. Do u see what I’m saying? Thats why yhe US abandoned the deal, because they came to conclusion the deal was incredibly one sided for Iran because essentially Iran gave up NOTHING for sanctions lifted and trade. And even now that the USA is out its still pursuing the JCPOA with Europe. It wouldn’t be worth it with just Europe if you actually wanted to or were in the process of making nukes, but if u werent then its still a good deal.

Same thing here. “There are no iranians” “yes there are” “no theyre not, only advisors” “nah man Khamenei himself is fighting there right now” “bro im telling u there isnt” “All of iran is in south syria right now” “alright bro well get rid of them, just gtfo out of Al Tanaf”.

I am uninformed about the oil thing with the ypg, sorry.

Tommy Jensen

Iran should not be pulling US around with a ring in its nose like we Americans are just stupid donkeys.
Im happy Trump cancelled the deal so Iran can see that we Americans are not stupids.
Respect rastaman.

hamster

Iran has every incentive now to start enriching Uranium and even pursuing a nuclear weapon now. What good exactly did pulling out of the deal do besides demonstrating to the world that America’s word cannot be trusted? Now any sort of deal the US makes can essentially be considered useless as it may be immediately scrapped by a subsequent administration.

Moreover, I don’t see any reason the US and Iran could not start to normalize relations. It would make a lot more sense than the US’s toxic relationship to Wahhabi Saudi Arabia.

Sinbad2

Iran already has the technology to build nukes.
Building nukes isn’t that difficult once you know how, and have the infrastructure in place.
The Israelis were assassinating Iranian nuclear scientists, because they know that it’s the knowledge that is important.
Iran is no different than Japan or Germany, they also have the knowledge and could have working weapons within months.
Being a nuclear armed nation has risks, because a nuclear armed enemy might get tempted to go first.

Iran only started enriching uranium when the US cut off its ability to buy fuel rods for its power stations. Iran signed a deal in 2010 that would allow Iran to send its depleted fuel rods overseas, to be replaced by new rods. Iran sent its rods overseas, but the US prevented Iran from getting new rods.

For Iran the uranium was always about electricity, did you know they export electricity?
The US turned it into nuclear weapons via copious amounts of BS.

hamster

Oh no, I totally agree with much of what you said. I’m just suggesting that Israel, the US and Saudi Arabia will still try to find some excuse to try and invade/overthrow the Iranian government, regardless of whether they have nukes or not. So in a way, if I was in Iranian shoes, I would be very tempted to build nukes regardless, considering the unprovoked hostility I would face from foreign powers even in the absence of a nuclear weapons program.

For example look what happened to Ghaddafi. In hindsight, I’m thinking it would’ve been beneficial for Ghaddafi to retain his WMD programs.

Rodger

Not really, Iran has nothing to gain from a nuclear program. It has everything to gain from smiling to the rest of the world and trading with them. Iran’s best play is to just ignore the US and Israel whenever they try to provoke it into stupidity.

Bill Wilson

That oil thing is pure nonsense. Syria was never capable of refining the very heavy sour crude from al-Omar fields so exported it instead. What’s more likely is the Syrian government providing the SDF with 70 barrels of decent Diesel fuel in exchange for guarding the oil & gas fields in that region.

S Melanson

I think the SAA would prefer to be the ones guarding the oil fields that can produce thousands of barrels of crude per day with only a portion (20 to 25%) of the production being heavy sour. 100 barrels of crude for 75 barrels of fuel cannot be right even if each day as it is insignificant compared to daily production of the field.

Also, the SDF (YPG) is hostile to the SAA and occupies illegally Syrian land. Why would Syria agree to take what is their oil in the first place and refine it and give back to the YPG forces that have come into conflict with the SAA – you do not supply the enemy.

Clearly the real terms of the agreement, if there is one, are yet to be revealed. Also, the chances of any deal between the YPG and Syria being concluded without US approval is zero. Yet their is no mention of the US at all giving the impression the YPG is acting independently of the US. This is very unlikely.

Wise Gandalf

So, syrian government supports jihadists?

Rodger

Cut up Syria into parts and none of the parts has a very solid claim on the Golan. It’s as simple as that.

Nod

US has 10000 nukes. UK 5000? France? Germany? Israel at least 300. Hypocritical yankees, go home. As soon as you give up the nukes. they invade, bomb, and do mass murder on you. You got to be a globalists bitch, to own the nukes.

Dr. Pro. Liv.

No you fucking idiot !

Yup, I was a bit off, since my numbers came from 1991.

And UK number was a typo.

Doesn’t change the point you dimwitted fuck.

1- You are still a globalist bitch.

2-US is still the ONLY real threat to the planet.

3- Americans are mass murderers , and additionally it is the only country to do genocide with nuclear bombs .

You are still a moron, who hopes yelling your foolish homophobic rants about

I dont care if you call me fag. I would much rather be gay, than stupid like yourself.

AlexanderAmproz is an intelligent person. one whom is capable of free thinking.

Of course we agree on much. And, if I were gay for AlexanderAmproz , I would be very disappointed since we live about 8000 km apart :P

You are an idiot, throwing about hate and prejudice, as reason.

Sinbad2

Could be a face saving effort for the US, Israel has told them to leave, so they spin it as has hard won deal?

S Melanson

You know thinking about it I think you are right. The media will report Iranian concession to save face and the US public will be none the wiser. Seems this whole freewheeling charade still has lots of entertainment potential ahead. Have your popcorn handy ;)

Rodger

Maybe the US has concluded that Jordan will be the next place to go up in flames. Southern Syria would be a great place to train and equip proxies in that coming war.

S Melanson

I believe the US and other NATO members have built up a significant military presence in Jordan and this was covered quite well on Israeli News Live. This suggests Jordan may serve as a springboard for military intervention in the region. If intervention occurs from Jordan soil, it would bring the conflict to Jordan which is a relatively small country in size with long borders with Iraq and Syria, making her vulnerable. Jordan could certainly go up in flames in this confusing chess match.

Rodger

The conflict is already in Jordan. And there is no way those forces there (not significant btw) can do anything to help. They shouldn’t have acted like a terrorist base in the Syrian conflict. Now they will get their reward.

S Melanson

Let us hope so.

Feudalism Victory

A simple deal benefit all sides

TrumanSparks

The Iranians won’t make a bad deal. The Americans are willing to make a bad deal, as long as it looks good on paper. They’ll try to “spin” it into a win. To the Americans, appearances are what matter.

Look at the Cuban Missile Crisis. Technically that was a win for the Soviets. They got a 2 for 1. We get rid of the missiles in Turkey and they get rid of the missiles in Cuba AND get a no invasion pledge. But the deal was spun in such a way that in the eyes of the world it was an American victory.

We’re after the same kind of deal here. Depends on how much the Iranians care about reality vs appearances.

Tommy Jensen

Liars always care about appearance. True Islam care about truth.

John Wallace

The best part of the Cuban deal is that we are all here too talk what ifs and who won what..

Sinbad2

Saving face is more important than life for many Americans.

Wise Gandalf

Look at the Cuban Missile Crisis. Technically that was a win for the Soviets.

No, soviets lost. America years later removed old missiles, in olanned regular term. Soviets lost the ability to threaten usa from close distance. You are yougling, who eats shitty alternative history.

Btw., here Iran has no word. Nobody will them ask. ONLY THANK FOR THE HELP AND SEND HOME.

TrumanSparks

Threaten distance close they need not. No alternative history see you.

No home will Iran send.

Luke Hemmming

“Hmmmm you seek Yoda.” lol…just joking dude. The way you structured your sentence reminded of Yoda speaking in star wars.

Dhil Gill

Your point see I do❗?

Rodger

Because subs weren’t around then…. :’)

Wise Gandalf

I did not understand you, bro. :)

Dhil Gill

That’s true.

Just one embellishment: The US missiles in Turkey were anyway obsolescent and due for replacement.
But yes – they WEREN’T replaced❗?

That Guy

Doesn’t sound like a bad deal tbh, sounds doable and good enough to be real.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

Al-Tanf is important for one reason only. This is where the Saudi gas pipeline will cross from Jordan into Syria if it’s ever built. The Turks hold all the north west of Syria and the US hold all the north east. If you draw a line from Al-Tanf directly north to Al Tabqah on a map, and then imagine the US annexing the east of Syria from that imaginary line all the way to the Iraqi border, you can actually see the route the pipeline will take. Jordan gets the first cut of taxes, then the US, then the Kurds and finally Erdogan. Syria gets nothing because there’s no where left for the proposed Iranian pipeline to go, and as well, Syria loses most of it’s natural resources.
The Saudi gas pipeline is actually closer to being made a reality than most people think, that’s if they even know about it at all. If any of you are wondering what the hell this pipeline has to do with anything concerning Russia and Syria and their war against the US, or maybe even think it’s just old news and irrelevant to what’s happening in Syria, think again.
Russia’s oil and gas exports account for more than 55% of the country’s total revenue base, and from that 70% comes from the European market. This makes the European nations buying gas and oil heavily or totally dependent on Russian oil + gas, and gives Russia quite a lot of political influence with those countries as well as a good income stream. But it works both ways, Russia’s economy is also heavily dependent on the European market, and until now hasn’t had any competition to worry about. The Saudi’s have been engaged in a trade war with Russia for more than a decade now, they over produce and underprice their oil and gas [we’ve been enjoying those low fuel prices] and are driving themselves as well as Russia broke, or very close to it in the process. The Saudi’s have lost 150 billion over the last 3 years, and are down from a huge cash reserve of 600 bill to 450 now. 50 bill a year is huge and even though the Saudi’s have put fuel prices up to compensate, they’re still bleeding 50 bill or more a year, that’s only 9 years until they run out of cash if it keeps up at this rate, they really will be in the poo. They also have to pay back Trump 110 bill for the weapons they just bought, so that takes that 450 bill reserve down to 340 bill, 7 years to go.
Russia’s different though, Putin started trying to diversify Russia’s export revenue stream a decade ago and he’s been very successful at it, unlike the Saudi’s who have nothing but oil and can’t do a thing but sell oil. Putin also lowered Russia’s dependence on a lot of imported goods and services at the same time by encouraging domestic enterprise’s to take up the slack. Russia’s economy has been doing quite well despite all the US imposed sanctions [that are also costing and losing it heaps of cash], and unlike the Saudi’s could go on like this forever.
But if the US and the Saudi’s did manage to build this gas pipeline through Syria, and do get that cheap and plentiful gas to the European markets, the boot would end up on the other foot, it’s bye bye Russia, nothing will save them.
55% of Russia’s revenue comes from gas + oil and 70% of that comes from Europe, If the Saudi’s break into that market what do we know will happen. The Saudi’s will not only end up with half the market or more, they’ll also destroy the prices as well. This won’t hurt the Saudi’s economy it’ll actually help it, they’ll stop losing 50 bill every year and instead start making some to pay back the 110 bill to Trump.
Russia would lose at least 20% of it’s import revenue even if prices remained the same, but lower prices for gas could mean it would probably be higher, possibly as high as 30%, and a loss of more than 50% market share would make it even higher again.
I wonder what sort of weapons and research Russia could afford if it’s revenue dropped by 30%, I don’t think it would remain a super power for more than a decade if that were to happen. Maybe that’s why Xi Jinping is spending so much cash in Syria and Iran, he doesn’t want to lose Russia as a possible ally [at some time in the future], and is insuring the US and Saudi pipeline is never built.
If you’re thinking well what’s the difference between the Saudi pipeline and the Iranian pipeline, won’t they both do the same thing to Russia’s economy if either of them break into the European market, NO Iran will actually work with Russia to lift oil and gas prices and so will all the other oil producing countries like Venezuela, the Saudi’s will do the exact opposite.
There is one more important factor, the new agreement between China and Russia, this deal allows Russia to build a gas pipeline directly into China and deliver unlimited amounts of gas and oil. This will do 4 important things for Russia, 1 it will increase Russia’s export revenue dramatically, 2 it will make Russia less reliant on Europe for revenue, 3 it will insure China’s reliance on Russia for it’s energy supplies, but at the same time also make China’s reliance on unreliable energy sources less problematic, and 4 it will make the European countries that buy Russian gas, much more vulnerable to Russian influence, something the US is also totally opposed to. The Russians control the tap that turns their heaters on.
The war in Syria is all about the pipelines, nothing else. The west wins if the Saudi pipeline’s built and the Chinese and Russians win if the Iranian one’s built. Russia, Iran and Venezuela will all increase world fuel prices and they’ll all prosper like never before, and the Saudi’s will either have to follow suite, or go broke keeping their prices low at the behest of the US.
Let’s see if the US moves out of Al-Tanf, I can’t imagine it happening. If it does I’m totally wrong about how important the pipelines really are. But if they don’t move out, I’ll also predict the Russian’s will eventually use a nuke, and make sure no pipe can ever be built there, at least not for another several hundred years.

Dhil Gill

Excellent summation of the underlying drivers of this conflict.

It should also be remembered that the USA has had plans to topple the Syrian Govt since at least 2006 – years before they got a chance to stir things up further in Syria in 2011, by financing and arming Jihadis.

Parisa Zoorgoo

wait a minute, a deal with the us?. dancing child burners will just ask trump to reneg on the deal!
