On September 30, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced an official of ISIS was captured during a helicopter raid in northern Syria that took place two days earlier.

In a statement, the command identified the official Mamduh Ibrahim al-haji Shaykh and said that he worked for the terrorist group as a “facilitator”.

No civilians were injured or killed during this operation, according to the command. The operation took place in the town of Mazrat Ya’rub, some 14 kilometers to the west of Raqqa city. Initially, it was reported that a senior leader of ISIS was captured.

“USCENTCOM remains committed to the enduring defeat of ISIS,” said Lieutenant Colonel Troy Garlock, CENTCOM spokesperson.

This was the second such operation by the coalition this month. Just last week, an ISIS Syria operational and facilitation official was captured by U.S. forces during a helicopter raid in northern Syria. CENTCOM identified the official in a statement released later as Abu Halil al-Fadani and said that he had ties throughout the ISIS network in the region.

The U.S. maintains some 900 troops in Syria under the pretext of fighting ISIS. The troops are deployed between a garrison on a strategic international highway that passes through al-Tanf area in the southeastern region and a network of bases at key oil and gas fields in the governorates of al-Haskah and Deir Ezzor in the northern and eastern regions.

Despite an increase in operation by the U.S. and its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), ISIS is still active in northern and eastern Syria.

According to a recent report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, ISIS cells carried out five attacks in the two regions over the past four weeks. Two of the attacks took place in Raqqa and three others in Deir Ezzor. The terrorist group’s attacks claimed the lives of three fighters of the SDF and a civilian.
