The United States Central Command said on January 26 that the Houthis had fired an anti-ship ballistic missile at USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, as it was sailing in the Gulf of Aden.
The missile was successfully shot down by the warship, the command said in a statement, adding that there were no injuries or damage reported.
This was not the only incident reported near Yemen during the day. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, said earlier that it had received a report of two missiles exploding in waters near a ship off the port of Aden.
The vessel and crew are safe and no damage has been reported, the UKMTO said in an advisory note. It added the vessel is proceeding to its next port of call and U.S.-led coalition forces are responding.
In a separate incident, the UKMTO said that it had received a report of an incident involving a ship 60 nautical miles off the Red Sea port of al-Hudaidah, which was controlled by the Houthis.
The Houthis have targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated and U.S. vessels using missiles and drones since November 19 in response to the ongoing Israeli war and siege on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 25,000 Palestinains.
The U.S. and the United Kingdom retaliated to the Houthis’ recent attacks by carrying out dozens of strikes on military targets on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen over the last few weeks. Nevertheless, the Houthis remain undeterred.
In a recent speech, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the Houthis, said that the group has so far fired 200 drones and 50 missiles in support of Gaza and promised to go on with military operations.
if the primitive houthies can cause such havoc in the red sea and still be able to hold out for months against the mighty us navy, royal navy and other european navies. imagine what iran could do to the world’s economy if they close the persian gulf and get directly involved in the war or are pushed to do so by israel and/or it’s us puppets in washington.
