Airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft the U.S. recently sent to the Middle East have been all deployed at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, one step away from Iran.
The six E-3G Sentry AEW&C were spotted at the air base, located in the center of the kingdom, in satellite images released by China’s MizarVision on February 21.
The aircraft is the latest modernized variant of the Boeing 707-based AEW&C. Featuring advanced radar, enhanced mission computing, and improved communications, it provides critical 360-degree, all-weather, long-range surveillance, battle management, and tracking to detect hostile, friendly, and neutral activity over land or water.
In addition to the AEW&Cs, the images from Prince Sultan Air Base show three E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node (BACN) aircraft.
The communication systems aboard the BACN enables real-time information flow across the battlespace between similar and dissimilar tactical data link and voice systems through relay, bridging, and data translation in line-of-sight and beyond-line-of-sight situations.
At least 21 aerial tankers, six KC-46 Pegasus and 15 KC-135 Stratotanker, can also be seen in the satellite images. These tankers were clearly deployed to support lengthy sorties by the AEW&C and BACN aircraft.

These aircraft were sent to the Middle East in recent days as a part of a massive U.S. military buildup that began last month after President Donald Trump threatened Iran with military action over a wave of protests that turned deadly.
The deployment of this number of AEW&C, BACN and tanker aircraft at a base this close to Iran suggest that the U.S. military is planning a relatively long campaign against the Islamic Republic, not just a one-off strike similar to Operation Midnight Hammer, which saw the American bombers and a submarine targeting three Iranian nuclear facilities amid the Israeli 12-day June war last year.
This is in line with recent reports by both Reuters and Axios, which said that the U.S. is planning a weeks-long campaign against Iran.
In fact, the U.S. military may be even planning to go as far as to establish a no-fly zone over the Islamic Republic in case a war broke out.
Besides the images of Prince Sultan Air Base, MizarVision also released images from Al Udeid Air Base near the Qatari capital, Doha. Eight KC-135 are currently deployed there. It is unclear when these tankers arrived at the air base, among the largest hosting U.S. troops in the Middle East.

Other images released by the company confirmed the deployment of F-35 Lightning II and F-16 F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in northeast Jordan. At least 18 F-35s, and 12 F-16s are seen in the images, in addition to dozens of F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets and MQ-9 Reaper combat drones which were spotted at the air base before.

All in all, the U.S. military appears to be fully ready to attack Iran. Trump is yet to make the decision, but the results of recent indirect talks with Tehran does not indicate that agreement is near.
