The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced early on February 9 that its forces carried out seven seven “self-defense strikes” against the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen over the past day.
The strikes destroyed four unmanned surface vessels (USV) and seven mobile anti-ship cruise missiles that were prepared to launch against ships in the Red Sea, the command said ina statement, adding that its forces identified these missiles and USVs in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and determined they presented an imminent threat to U.S. Navy ships and merchant vessels in the region.
“These actions will protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S. Navy and merchant vessels,” CENTCOM concluded.
Around an hour after CENTCOM’s announcement, Yemen’s Al-Masirah TV, which is run by the Houthis, said that a new “American-British aggression” targeted the areas of al-Jabbana and Taif in the western province of al-Hudaydah. The news channel didn’t report any casualties.
The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom since November 19 in response to the ongoing Israeli war and siege on the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 27,000 Palestinains.
The U.S. and the UK retaliated by carrying out dozens of strikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in recent weeks. Still, the group remains undeterred.
Houthi leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi on February 8 said that recent strikes against his group’s have not affected its military capabilities.
“The American-British strikes on our country (group’s camps) this week amounted to 86 strikes and have not affected or limited our armed capabilities,” he said in a televised speech aired by Al-Masirah, adding “our missile attacks will continue in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.”
The group’s attacks would stop only when “the U.S., Britain and Israel allow access of food and medicine to the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip and stop war on the Palestinians,” al-Houthi said, adding that his group’s operations are part of a wider move by the regional resistance.
