President Donald Trump issued another warning to Iran on January 5, saying that the Islamic Republic would get “hit very hard” by the United States if more protesters die during demonstrations that have entered a second week.
“We’re watching it very closely. If they start killing people like they have in the past, I think they’re going to get hit very hard by the United States,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
At least 20 people, including a member of law enforcement-security forces, have been killed in the protests, which broke out as a result of worsening economic conditions, according to human rights groups.
This was Trump’s second warning to Iran since the start of the protests. In the very first days, he said that the U.S. is “locked and loaded and ready to go,” threatening that Washington would step in if the Islamic Republic “shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters.”
Trump’s latest warning came just a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israelis “identify with the struggle of the Iranian people.”
“The government of Israel, the State of Israel, and my own policies — we identify with the struggle of the Iranian people, with their aspirations for freedom, liberty and justice,” Netanyahu said in comments at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, according to his office. “It is quite possible that we are at a moment when the Iranian people are taking their fate into their own hands.”
The U.S. backed the 12-day June war on Iran, going as far as joining Israel in attacking nuclear facilities in the Islamic Republic.
In a clear attempt to deter the two, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards started another missile and air defense exercise on January 4.
The very next day, Iran accused Israel of trying to undermine its national unity, citing Netanyahu’s latest remarks as an example.
“The Zionist regime is determined to exploit the slightest opportunity to sow division and undermine our national unity, and we must remain vigilant,” foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei said at a weekly press conference, before accusing Israeli and U.S. leaders of “incitement to violence.”
The escalation against Iran began weeks before the protests with a coordinated media campaign focused on Iran’s attempt to rebuild and expand its missile program.
Following a lengthy meeting with Netanyahu last month, Trump announced that he would back a new Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic if the latter “will continue with missiles.” Trump, however, said at the time that he won’t “talk about the overthrow of a regime.”
Trump’s warnings after the protests shows that this stance on regime change has now shifted. The media campaign also saw a shift, focusing mainly on portraying an image of panic within the government of Iran.
The New York Times reported on January 4 that Iran’s Supreme National Security Council held a late-night emergency meeting to discuss ways to contain nationwide protests with less violence and to prepare for potential strikes by the U.S. and Israel.
Three Iranian officials familiar with government deliberations told the newspaper that the Islamic Republic had been thrust into “survival mode” as a result of the protests and Trump’s latest threats.
Another report released by The Times the very next day claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will escape to Russia if his regime collapses.
“The ‘plan B’ is for Khamenei and his very close circle of associates and family, including his son and nominated heir apparent, Mojtaba,” an intelligence source told the British newspaper.
Many in Washington seem to be enthusiastic about escalating against Iran. This is especially the case with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of Trump, who put on a cap with the Pahlavi Iran flag and the writing “Make Iran Great Again” during an interview on FOX News on January 5.
All recent developments indicate that the U.S. and Israel are moving towards another war with Iran, one that will see far more involvement by Washington. While dismantling the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program was the title of the June war, taking down the missile capabilities of Tehran, and supporting the opposition will be the pretext of the next one.
This does not mean, however, that the U.S. and Israel want to dismantle the government of Iran in a direct manner. The two will rather take out what they identify as “radical elements” within the government, like Khamenei, and hope that “moderate elements” will take over without driving a complete collapse.
An example of this approach is what the U.S. is doing in Venezuela, where it captured President Nicolás Maduro and is now engaged in talks with what remains of his government.
