United State-led coalition drones violated the deconfliction protocols over Syria at least 362 times last September, Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria, announced during a briefing on October 4.
The coalition and the Russian military group in Syria agreed on the deconfliction protocols in question on 9 December 2019 to improve coordination and prevent aerial incidents.
Kulit said that by violating the protocols, the coalition is creating dangerous preconditions for incidents and aggravating the situation in Syria’s airspace.
During the same briefing, the Russian military official said that U.S.-led coalition fighter jets and drones violated the Syrian airspace over the southeastern area of al-Tanf at least 13 times over the past day.
The coalition maintains a large garrison on a strategic international highway in al-Tanf along with a 55-kilometer no-fly zone.
“In the al-Tanf area, there were 13 violations committed by four pairs of F-16 fighter jets, a pair of Rafale fighter jets, a pair of Typhoon fighter jets and an MQ-1C multi-purpose unmanned aircraft system that belong to the coalition,” Kulit said.
In addition to its garrison in al-Tanf, the coalition keeps a network of bases at key oil and gas fields in the northeastern governorates of Deir Ezzor and al-Hasakah. This deployment, which is allegedly meant to counter ISIS, is not approved by the Syrian government who consider it to be an occupation.
On the other side, the Russian military is present in Syria to fight ISIS and other terrorist groups under an agreement with the government.
The U.S.-led coalition expanded its aerial operations over Syria without any coordination with the Russian military. This escalation led to several dangerous situations where American and Russian warplanes nearly clashed. It also threatened the safety of civilian flights, especially over al-Tanf.
