The United States may be just weeks away from launching strikes against drug cartels inside Venezuela, NBC News reported on September 27.
According to the report, which cites four sources familiar with the matter, U.S. military officials are actively drawing up options for such strikes.
Tensions have been mounting between Venezuela and the U.S. since last month, when the administration of President Donald Trump doubled the reward for the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to $50 million on drug trafficking charges then deployed a large naval force with more than 4,000 troops close to the country’s shores on a so-called “counter narco-terror operation”.
The U.S. military has already struck at least three boats from Venezuela allegedly carrying drugs this month, killing at least 17 people on board.
Trump is yet to approve any of the attack plans, but the move comes in response to concerns that Maduro has failed to stem the flow of drugs from his country into the U.S. and elsewhere, according to the report.
It notes that plans being discussed primarily focus on drone strikes against drug trafficking groups’ members and leadership, as well as targeting drug labs.
“We’ll see what happens,” Trump said on September 14 when asked about whether he would support strikes inside the South American Country. “Venezuela is sending us their gang members, their drug dealers and drugs. It’s not acceptable.”
Later it was reported that Maduro inked a letter to Trump encouraging him to pursue dialogue. The letter was, however, criticized by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
“Frankly, I think there were a lot of lies that were repeated by Maduro in that letter, and the administration’s position on Venezuela has not changed,” Leavitt told reporters on September 22.
“We view the Maduro regime as illegitimate, and the president has clearly shown that he’s willing to use any and all means necessary to stop the illegal trafficking of deadly drugs from the Venezuelan regime into the United States of America.”
Still, NBC news confirmed in its report that discussions between the U.S. and Venezuela are ongoing through Middle Eastern leaders serving as intermediaries.
While Venezuela seems open to a diplomatic solution, it is already preparing for the worst. Earlier this month, Maduro ordered the activation of 284 “fronts of battle” across the country with a force made up from the military, police and civilian volunteers. He said that the mobilization, codenamed “Plan Independencia 200,” would keep Venezuela’s coastline free of “imperialists, invaders and violent groups.”
The U.S. escalation against Venezuela presents a very unique case where the intentions of Washington are very clear and even acknowledged by the mainstream media in the West. Trump is clearly interested in a regime change in Caracas that would allow U.S. companies to tap into the country’s vast oil reserve, believed to be the largest in the world.
