The United States-led coalition continues to expand its operations over Syria, creating more tensions with the Russian military group in the country.
During a briefing on September 26, Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy chief of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria, reported six violations of Syria airspace over the southeastern area of al-Tanf by coalition fighter jets and drones.
“Two pairs of F-16 fighter jets, as well as two MQ-1C multi-role unmanned aerial vehicles violated Syria’s airspace in the al-Tanf area, across which international air routes run, six times during the day,” the commander said.
During the same period, the coalition violated the American-Russian deconfliction protocols by carrying out seven flights with drones over Syria without coordinating with the Russian military, Kulit added.
The U.S.-led coalition maintains a garrison in al-Tanf with a 55-kilometer no-fly zone. In addition, it keeps a network of bases at key oil and gas fields in the northeastern governorates of Deir Ezzor and al-Hasakah. This presence, which is not approved by the Syrian government, is allegedly meant to counter ISIS.
In recent months, the coalition expanded its aerial operations over Syria, challenging both the country’s government and the Russian military group there.
While the U.S.-led coalition’s repeated violations will not likely lead to a military confrontation, it could eventually cause a dangerous incident.
