The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on November 26 that it had struck what it described as “an Iranian-aligned militia weapons storage facility” in Syria.
In a statement, the command said that the strike was carried out in response to an attack by Iran-aligned groups against U.S. forces in Syria a day earlier.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a London-based monitoring group, reported a rocket attack on a U.S. base near the town of al-Shaddadi in the southern al-Hakash countryside a few hours before CENTCOM announced its retaliatory strike.
According to the group, the strike targeted the government-held town of al-Mayadin in the southern Deir Ezzor countryside.
CENTCOM said that the strike was carried out to degrade the ability of Iran-aligned groups to “plan and launch future attacks on U.S. and Coalition forces who are in the region to conduct D-ISIS operations.”
“As previously stated, we will not tolerate any attacks on our personnel and coalition partners. We are committed to taking all necessary actions to ensure their protection,” said General Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander.
The command said that a battle damage assessment was underway, noting there was no information about civilian casualties.
The SOHR didn’t report any casualties in the rocket attack on al-Shaddadi base, or in the U.S. retaliatory strike on al-Mayadin.
The U.S. maintains some 900 troops in Syria under the pretext of fighting ISIS, most of whom are deployed at key gas and oil fields in Deir Ezzor and neighboring al-Hasakah.
Attacks targeting U.S. forces in Syria and Iraq escalated after the outbreak of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip last year, with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of Iran-aligned factions, claiming responsibility for most of the attacks.
