The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on August 30 that its forces destroyed a missile system and a drone of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in Yemen over the past day.
The systems “presented a clear and imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” the command said in a statement.
“This action was taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels,” it added.
CENTCOM didn’t provide any further details on the targeted Houthi systems, nor revealed where and when exactly they were struck by its forces. There were also no reports of any fresh U.S. strikes on Yemen by Houthi-run media on August 29 or 30.
Over the last ten months, the Houthis targeted dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom In the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.
In addition, the group’s air defenses shot down at least seven American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
During the same period, the group also launched from Yemen more than 200 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and suicide drones at Israel, mostly toward the Red Sea port city of Eilat in the south, according to the Israeli military.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January. Israel also launched an attack against the Red Sea port of al-Hodeidah last month after a deadly Houthi drone strike on the city of Tel Aviv. However, the group remains undeterred.
In fact, the leader of the Houthis revealed during a recent speech that the group was still preparing to respond to the Israeli attack on al-Hodeidah and said that the “timing” would be a surprise.
“Preparations to respond to the Israeli enemy are ongoing and the timing will surprise the enemy,” said Abdul-Malik al-Houthi on August 28.
The leader added that “while we are interested in the issue of response, our concern is greater than that, and we are preparing to raise our operational performance in support of Palestine to more influential levels.”
