On April 20, two officers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) were gunned down near the front with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.
The two officers were reportedly traveling aboard a motorcycle with a civilian along a road near the town of Rasm al-Qabu in al-Quneitra countryside when they were attacked by unknown militants. Both officers were killed on the spot along with the civilian.
Syrian activists identified the two fallen officers as First Lieutenant Amer Majed Shamma and First Lieutenant Ali Tariq Ali. Both of them were reportedly serving in the ranks of the SAA’s 90th Brigade.
This was the third to target Syrian officers on the Golan Heights front in a week. On April 13, simultaneous explosions rocked two different checkpoints of the SAA near the town of Ghadir al-Bustan, killing an officer and wounding three soldiers. Later on April 16, an officer of the Military Intelligence Directorate was killed and four others were wounded when militants attacked a post between the villages of al-Mushirafah and Ras al-Khualid.
No side has yet claimed responsibility for any of the recent attacks in al-Quneitra countryside. The deadly attacks were likely carried out by cells belonging to terrorist groups, like ISIS, or even operatives of the Israeli intelligence.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) threatened the SAA’s 90th Brigade on several occasions in the past over alleged cooperation with Lebanon’s Hezbollah. Just a day before the last attack, the IDF reportedly shelled posts of the brigade near the Golan Heights front.
Overall, the security situation on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights front appears to be deteriorating. The unrest will likely force the SAA to increase its presence on the front.
