At least four people were killed in a series of Israeli drone and artillery strikes that targeted different parts of southern Lebanon on October 14.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched several strikes on southern Lebanon in the morning following an alleged drone attack, the launch of an anti-aircraft missile and a raid by Palestinian fighters. Later in the evening more strikes hit the region after a fire attack on six different military positions in the Israeli-occupied Shebaa Farms.
Hezbollah, the dominant force in southern Lebanon, claimed responsibility for the evening attack, saying in two separate statements that its fighters targeted five sites and an observation post of the IDF. The group’s Military Media released footage of the attack.
In a later statement, Hezbollah acknowledged that one of its fighters was killed in southern Lebanon as a result of IDF shelling.
The same artillery strikes killed two Lebanese civilians in the town of Chebaa, both were reportedly elderly men in their 70s.
In addition, Hamas Movement, which maintains a large presence in Palestinians refugee camps in Lebanon and operates in the south in cooperation with Hezbollah, announced on October 15 that three of its fighters were killed during the attempted raid a day earlier. The IDF released footage of the drone strikes that allegedly killed the fighters.
The escalation in southern Lebanon, the most serious since the 2006 war, began after the October 7 Hamas-led surprise attack against Israel from the Gaza Strip. Hezbollah, Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad have been launching attacks from the region in response to strikes on Gaza, distracting the IDF and complicating its operations.
Clashes in the region have so far claimed the lives of four Israeli troops. A fifth service member, a female technician, was pronounced dead on October 15 after being wounding while handing the remains of a missile fired by Hezbollah.
The recent casualties will likely lead to even more escalations on the Lebanon Front. Hezbollah and its Palestinian allies will certainly respond with deadly attacks.
