Late on October 24, a Turkish combat drone carried out an airstrike on the town of al-Qamishli in the northern countryside of Syria’s al-Hasakah.

Some source said that the drone struck a military position of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). However, other sources reported that the target was a center of the group’s civil wing, the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

In a statement released on October 25, the ANNES claimed that two civilians were killed as a result of the Turkish drone strike on al-Qamishli.

The deadly drone strike was the most recent in a series of Turkish attacks on the SDF’s areas of influence in northern and northeastern Syria.

The strike may have been meant as a response to recent attacks by the SDF and its affiliates in the northern Aleppo countryside on the Turkish military and its proxies. There have been four attacks on Turkish bases in the region since the beginning of October. None of them resulted in casualties.

Turkey is apparently trying to deter the SDF with its airpower. Just a few months ago, Ankara wanted to launch a new large-scale military operation against the group. However, pressure from Russia, Iran and even the United States have apparently forced Ankara to abandon these plans, at least for now.
