On January 15, Abu Zubair Al-Ghab, a senior military commander of the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL), survived an assassination attempt in the northwestern Syrian region of Greater Idlib.
Unidentified gunmen targeted the commanders’ vehicle as it was passing on a road near the town of Atimah in the northern countryside of Idlib. Abu Zubair was lightly wounded. None of his family members, who were with him at the time of the attack, were harmed.
The NFL, which was formed by several factions in 2018, is Turkey’s main proxy in Greater Idlib. Abu Zubair is a senior commander of the NFL’s main faction, the Ahrar al-Sham Movement.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attempt on Abu Zubair’s life. However, Syrian opposition activists said that al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, was behind the assassination attempt.
Abu Zubair is well-known for his stands against HTS, who has been hunting down its opponents in Greater Idlib for several years now.
The attempt on Abu Zubair’s life could provoke a serious conflict between HTS and the NFL. HTS attacked the NFL on several occasions in the last three years. Despite this, the Turkish-backed coalition continues to support the terrorist group against Syrian government forces.
