Turkish Army Suffers First Casualty In Northern Iraq Operation

The Turkish military has suffered its first casualty in the course of Operation Claw-Tiger in the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq.

On June 19, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense announced that a soldier, who was injured in a clash with Kurdish fighters, had succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

The slain soldier was identified as infantryman Omer Kahya from the town of Pazarcık in southern Turkish province of Kahramanmaraş.

The Turkish military launched Operation Claw-Tiger against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region on June 15. More than 700 positions of the Kurdish group have been targeted in the framework of the operation, so far.

According to the Kurdistan Region Government, Turkish airstrikes claimed lives of at least six Kurdish civilians.

Claw-Tiger in the most recent in a series of operations targeting PKK remnants in Kurdstan. These operations inflicted serious losses on the group. Nevertheless, the Kurdish group continues to maintain a strong presence in the region.

If the Kurds still maintain a strong presence in the region then claw-tiger is more of a wet kitten. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Let’s hope this loss of life isn’t the thin end of the wedge for International law breaking Turkish soldiers. No really. :)
