Turkey has apparently supplied the forces of the Islamist-led Syrian Transitional Government (STG) with a fairly large number of armored vehicles.
While evidence of these supplies first emerged last year, the government’s recent operations against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) revealed that the number of Turkish-made armored vehicles handed over to STG forces could very well be in the hundreds.
The supplies included Cobra and Cobra II armored tactical vehicles, made by Otokar, as well as Amazon mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles, made by BMC Otomotiv. In addition, STG forces were supplied with Ejder 6×6 armored personnel carriers manufactured by Nurol Makina.
The Ejder 6×6 vehicles, which are notably unarmed, first saw action during the STG attack on Kurdish neighborhoods in the city of Aleppo in northern Syria between January 6 and 10. Cobra vehicles were also spotted in the city before the attack.
The Ejder 6×6, which weights 18 tons, features a v-shaped hull for improved protection against landmines and improvised explosive devoices, and has an operational range of 700 kilometers, with a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour. The Cobra has a similar hull design, although much lighter with a weight just over six tons. The 4×4 vehicle has an operational range of 752 kilometers, and a top speed of 115 kilometers per hour.
All other vehicles were spotted later during the large-scale offensive the government launched against the SDF in northeastern Syria on January 13. The offensive came to a halt on January 20 with the announcement of a four-day ceasefire.
Amazon vehicles, which are notably armed with remotely-controlled weapon stations, were mainly seen in the city of Raqqa and its countryside, as well as in the northern al-Hasakah countryside and the eastern Aleppo countryside. Meanwhile, Cobra II vehicles appeared in the southern and eastern countryside of al-Hasakah.
Both 4×4 vehicles also feature v-shaped hulls. The Amazon, which weights well over 14 tons, has a range of 600-800 kilometers, with a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour. Meanwhile, the 12-ton Cobra II has a range of 700 kilometers, with a top speed of 110 kilometers per hour.
STG forces have also been spotted deploying V-150 amphibious armored vehicles made by the United States’ Cadillac Gage. The vehicles, which were most likely supplied by Turkey, appeared in the southern and eastern countryside of al-Hasakah, in addition to the eastern Aleppo countryside.
Following the fall of the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad, Turkey emerged as the main ally of the STG which was formed by Islamist rebels it backed for years. Ankara is now playing a leading role in the rebuilding of the country’s forces.
A report by Bloomberg from last October revealed Turkish plans to arm government forces in Syria with advanced weapons, including armored vehicles, drones, artillery, missiles, and air defense systems.
While so far there has been no evidence indicating that Turkey supplied the STG with any military equipment other than light weapons, some drone jammers, and armored vehicles, this could change in the near future.
