United States President Donald Trump said on July 26 that Thailand and Cambodia agreed to promptly start ceasefire negotiations after three days of border clashes.
“Both Parties are looking for an immediate Ceasefire and Peace … They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE,” Trump, who is currently on a visit to Scotland, wrote on Truth Social after speaking with leaders of the two countries on the phone.
The clashes broke out on July 24 morning following tensions over mine explosions that wounded several Thai troops in the Thai province of Ubon Ratchathani. The violence began at the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple site in the Thai province of Surin, which was claimed by Cambodia, before spreading out to other disputed border areas.
Thailand and Cambodia share a 817-kilometer border, largely mapped by the French when they controlled Cambodia as a colony.
Cambodia has previously sought a ruling from the United Nations International Court of Justice over disputed areas. However, Thailand does not recognize the court’s jurisdiction and claims that some areas along the border were never fully demarcated, including the sites of the ancient temples.
At least 35 people have so far been killed by the clashes, which saw Thailand deploying its fighter jets and drones with Cambodia responding by rocket fire.
Before announcing the ceasefire talks, Trump said he had spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and his Thai counterpart in the hopes of brokering a truce. The U.S. The president linked his diplomatic outreach to ongoing trade talks with both countries.
“They are also looking to get back to the ‘Trading Table’ with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS,” said Trump. “I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!”
“We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting — And I have told them so!” he said in an earlier post.
On the first day of the clashes China offered to mediate. Later on the second day, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had said the two sides had agreed to a ceasefire. Cambodia has announced support for the proposal, while Thailand has said it agreed with it in principle.

it really wouldn’t be surprising if the mine that hurt thai soldiers was in fact placed there by us agents (possibly from side of thailand) to provoke a conflict so that then trump can come along and milk both sides while presenting himself as a “mediator”…
please tell me you’re not serious.
as if phoney boloni isn’t obvious .
thailand, the country where a king is worshipped like a god and where you end up in jail if you step on a banknote with this king’s image, and cambodia, the country where the old dictator handed over the position of ruler to his son… would never force their people into this senseless war without the evil usa, because the usa and israel are to blame for everything. the thai god king and the son of the old dictator of cambodia are innocent, nice people, just like kim jong un.
very naive, good try, totally stupid though .america’s every kings enemy really regardless of how they play the game on the surface .
sometimes i think that a nuclear war wouldn’t be a bad thing, or an asteroid or something like that…especially when i read the comments on sf.
