United States President Donald Trump said on June 12 that Israel may attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, but that Tehran can avoid conflict by agreeing to a deal offered by Washington.
“I don’t want to say imminent, but it looks like it’s something that could very well happen,” Trump told reporters when asked if Israel will attack Iran.
Still, Trump called on Israel not to attack Iran. He also stressed that a deal on Tehran’s nuclear program remains within reach.
“We are fairly close to a pretty good agreement,” Trump said. “I don’t want them [Israel] going in, because I think it would blow it.”
“love to avoid the conflict,” the U.S. President continued.
“Iran’s going to have to negotiate a little bit tougher, meaning they’re going to have to give us something they’re not willing to give us right now,” he added.
Earlier in the day, U.S. news outlet NBC reported that Israel is considering launching an attack on Iran in the coming days, even though Washington is unlikely to support the move. A separate report from CBS said that U.S. officials have been told Israel is “fully ready to launch an operation into Iran.”
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that senior Iranian military and government officials had developed a plan to immediately respond to an Israeli attack on the country’s nuclear facilities with a large-scale missile strike. Previous reports revealed that Tehran was prepared to attack nuclear facilities in Israel.
The Iranian military also launched on June 12 drills earlier than planned to focus on “enemy movements,” according to state media.
Just a day earlier, the U.S. began drawing down the presence of people who are not deemed essential to operations in the Middle East.
The the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center also issued a warning to ships in the region saying that it “has been made aware of increased tensions within the region which could lead to an escalation of military activity having a direct impact on mariners.”
Amid these tensions, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) passed on June 12 a resolution declaring that Iran is in noncompliance with its nuclear safeguards obligations.
“Iran’s many failures to uphold its obligations since 2019 to provide the Agency with full and timely cooperation regarding undeclared nuclear material and activities at multiple undeclared locations in Iran… constitutes non-compliance with its obligations under its Safeguards Agreement,” said the resolution.
The UN nuclear watchdog passed the resolution at its Board of Governors meeting in Vienna, the first such censure against Iran in two decades. The U.S., France, United Kingdom, and Germany submitted the resolution.
The vote passed with 19 in favor, three opposed – Russia, China, and Burkina Faso – 11 abstentions, and two who did not vote.
Despite the escalation, Oman confirmed that a sixth round of nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran will be held over the weekend. The Trump administration said that U.S. special envoy to the Mideast Steve Witkoff will travel to Muscat, where he will meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
The U.S. appears to be in disagreement with Israel on how to proceed with Iran. However, the reality is likely very different.
Washington’s recent moves, including the ongoing limited evacuation, suggest that it is well aware of the Israeli plans to attack Iran. Trump is now using this threat to pressure Tehran into a more favorable nuclear deal, one that is unlikely to allow for any enrichment of uranium in the Islamic Republic.
In addition, while recent reports suggest that Israel is preparing to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities on its own, the U.S. is highly likely to provide support, at least with intelligence.
By appearing to be standing on the side, the U.S. may be hoping to limit Iran reaction to any Israeli attack. Of course, all of this is certainly coordinated with Israel. Tehran has already accused the IAEA of being complicit in the current wave of escalation.

bad idea from most aspects i think. when you look at the number of missiles that have hit ukraine they’d probably be wasting their time given the distance between israel and iran, it’s more likely to make the iranians angry and retaliate. they bombed iran before and it didn’t work then.
