President Donald Trump on March 13 said that the United States carried out “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East” against “every military target” on Iran’s Kharg Island.
The island is Iran’s most critical maritime oil export hub, handling roughly 90-95 percent of its crude exports and acting as a central, vulnerable lifeline for the nation’s economy.
“Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel, Kharg Island,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“For reasons of decency, I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island,” he added.
Trump threatened, however, that he could reconsider this decision if Iran continues to interfere with the freedom of passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most critical maritime chokepoint, with roughly one-fifth of global oil consumption passing through. The waterway serves as the primary gateway for energy exports from major producers like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Kuwait.
“However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision,” Trump said.
“Iran’s Military, and all others involved with this Terrorist Regime, would be wise to lay down their arms, and save what’s left of their country, which isn’t much!,” he added.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) previously warned that any ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz would be attacked, and the waterway has effectively been closed since the start of the American-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, with at least 16 vessels hit by Iranian fire there and in nearby waters.
In its first response to Trump’s threat, the IRGC said that its naval forces’ attacks will continue until all American terrorist bases in the region are destroyed.
Trump’s latest threat came right after several reports revealed that the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit — permanently based in Japan — was ordered to the Middle East with more than 2,200 marines on three navy ships. The deployment suggests that the U.S. may be planning to take over Kharg Island.
Keith Kellogg, the U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine, said recently that the U.S. and Israel should seize Kharg Island. Kellogg explained during an interview on Fox News that if Kharg Island, located in the Northern Persian Gulf, is taken, “that’s 89% of petroleum usage that the Iranians have.”
Recent developments indicate that the U.S. is not planning to end the war anytime soon. Kharg Island could soon become the battlefield between American and Iranian forces. Trump’s latest threat will likely further raise oil prices, which are currently hovering around $100 per barrel.
