United States President Donald Trump on January 13 told protesters in Iran that “help is on its way” and urged them to keep protesting, as violence in the Islamic Republic reaches a new peak with reports of thousands of casualties.
“Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, in what amounts to a call on the protesters to oust the government.
Trump also said that he has “cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS.”
“HELP IS ON ITS WAY,” he added.
Similar remarks by Trump have directly caused serious escalation of violence in Iran since the protests there first broke out late in December, with him vowing more than once to punish the Iranian government if protesters are killed by security forces.
In its latest report, the U.S. -based Human Rights Activists News Agency said that at least 1,850 people, both civilians and security personnel, have been killed and at least 16,784 have been arrested so far. However, an Iranian official told Reuters earlier in the day that around 2,000 people were killed, blaming “terrorists” for the deaths of civilians and security personnel.
An even higher estimate was attributed to the Israeli Mossad agency, which reportedly informed the U.S. that 5,000 people have been killed in the protests across Iran, according to an American official quoted by Israel’s Channel 12 news.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Channel 13 reported that the Israeli Cabinet has been briefed by the intelligence that approximately 500 Iranian security personnel have been killed in the protests.
The exact toll remains unknown, but it is very clear from all sources, including Israeli intelligence, that both protestors and security personnel are being killed.
Iranian authorities more than once reported attacks by gunmen who attacked both sides, and said that some of those arrested were linked to the Mossad.

On January 13, the authorities even announced the seizure of “spying and sabotage electronics,” including Starlink satellite internet terminals and mobile signal boosters. This comes amid an internet blackout in the country that began at least five days earlier.
Considering the severity of the situation, Iran didn’t take Trump’s latest remarks lightly. National security chief Ali Larijani called Trump one of the “main killers of the people of Iran” in a post on X. He also named Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the second “killer” on his list.
Trump later, however, doubled down on his threats to Iran, advising American citizens who remain in the Islamic Republic to leave.
“I would say it’s not a bad idea to get out,” Trump said when questioned whether American citizens or citizens of U.S. allies should leave Iran.
Several recent reports that Trump was presented with options including strikes, in addition to others involving cyber operation options and psychological campaigns to disrupt Iranian command structures, communications and state-run media.
Trump’s latest remarks, and the fact that Israel has reportedly placed its air defenses on high alert, suggest that the U.S. could attack soon.
A single attack will not, however, bring down the Iranian government. Despite the high level of violence, the current protests in the Islamic Republic are still smaller in scale than the Mahsa Amini protests of 2022, and can’t be compared to the mass protest of 2009, which were called at the time the Green Movement.
Trump may be planning to attack Iran, only to engage in talks with its government right after. But such a maneuver is not guaranteed to succeed.
Even after the 12-day June war with Israel, the Iranian government refused to accept any of the U.S. key demands with regard to its nuclear and missile program.
That’s being said, an attack by the U.S. could weaken the government enough to encourage more violence, and with the Iranian opposition deeply fragmented along ethnic and ideological lines, the Islamic Republic could easily slip into a destructive civil war.
