United States President Donald Trump ordered on December 16 a “total and complete blockade” of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela, designating the government of the country as a “foreign terrorist organization”.
The announcement brought the U.S. pressure campaign on Venezuela, which began back in October and escalated into a military operation against drug traffickers in September, to a whole new level.
Venezuela said that the campaign is aimed at allowing “external powers to rob its immeasurable oil and gas wealth“, even before U.S. forces seized a sanctioned oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela last week, with Trump later telling reporters, “I assume we’re going to keep the oil.”
Since the seizure, a de-facto blockade has been in place, with tankers carrying millions of barrels of oil staying in Venezuelan waters rather than risk seizure. This led to a sharp decline in the country’s oil exports.
“Venezuela is completely surrounded by the largest Armada ever assembled in the History of South America. It will only get bigger, and the shock to them will be like nothing they have ever seen before — Until such time as they return to the United States of America all of the Oil, Land, and other Assets that they previously stole from us. The illegitimate Maduro Regime is using Oil from these stolen Oil Fields to finance themselves, Drug Terrorism, Human Trafficking, Murder, and Kidnapping. For the theft of our Assets, and many other reasons, including Terrorism, Drug Smuggling, and Human Trafficking, the Venezuelan Regime has been designated a FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATION,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Therefore, today, I am ordering A TOTAL AND COMPLETE BLOCKADE OF ALL SANCTIONED OIL TANKERS going into, and out of, Venezuela. The Illegal Aliens and Criminals that the Maduro Regime has sent into the United States during the weak and inept Biden Administration, are being returned to Venezuela at a rapid pace. America will not allow Criminals, Terrorists, or other Countries, to rob, threaten, or harm our Nation and, likewise, will not allow a Hostile Regime to take our Oil, Land, or any other Assets, all of which must be returned to the United States, IMMEDIATELY,” he added.
The Venezuelan government issued a statement in response to the announcement, saying it rejected Trump’s “grotesque threat”.
“The President of the United States intends to impose, in an utterly irrational manner, a supposed naval blockade on Venezuela with the aim of stealing the riches that belong to our homeland,” the government said.
Ahead of the announcement, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration again warned airlines of a “worsening security situation” when flying over Venezuela, urging caution. In a statement, the agency said that threats could pose risks to aircraft at all altitudes, including during overflights, takeoff and landing, and while on the ground.

An uptake in the activities of U.S. military aircraft, including fighter jets and electronic warfare planes, was also noted over the Caribbean Sea off the shores of Venezuela.

A day earlier, the U.S. Southern Command said that it struck three boats carrying drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing eight alleged traffickers.
The strikes brought the number of alleged drug boats hit since the U.S. began its military operation against drug cartels in the Eastern Pacific and the Caribbean Sea last September to 25. The operation, recently codenamed “Southern Spear,” has so far claimed the lives of at least 95 people, all alleged drug traffickers.
The latest announcement by Trump shows that the U.S. is determined to topple the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. That being said, Washington still does not appear to be enthusiastic about achieving this through direct military intervention.
The oil blockade will hit Caracas very hard. People will be affected the most. Still, it fails to cause an uprising or some conflict within the country’s military, the U.S. could actually back down as a military intervention will then look even more risky.
