On January 3, a Turkish combat drone targeted a position of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the village of Tell Tawil to the north of the city of al-Hasakah in Syria’s northern region.

The SDF-affiliated Hawar News Agency said that the drone strike caused some material losses only. However, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that two SDF fighters were killed and a third was wounded as a result of the strike.

The reports of casualties were confirmed by the Russian Sputnik news agency, which said that the targeted position is an intelligence center of the SDF.

This was Turkey’s first drone strike on northern and eastern Syria this year. In 2022, the SOHR documented at least 99 strikes on the region. The drone strikes claimed the lives of 98 people, including civilians, SDF officials and military personnel.

The strike came as the SDF and its main backer, the United States-led coalition, are counducting an operation against ISIS cells in different parts of al-Hasakah.

It also came amid Russian-sponsored talks between Turkey and Syria, which are meant to improve coordination against what Ankara and Damascus call “terrorist groups.” One of these group is the People’s Protection Units, the core factions of the SDF.

Overall, it appears that Turkey is planning to continue its military campaign against the SDF and its affiliates in northern and eastern Syria this year.
