The Unknown War is an American 20-part series that documents the World War II conflict between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
Today, SouthFront shares the fourth part of the series, titled “To the East.” This part tells the story of the mass migration of western Soviet citizens and industries eastward as a result of the Nazi German invasion at the start of the war.
In the first six months of the war, about 1,500 major factories were moved to safety in the east. Eighteen million workers, employees and their families were transported with the factories. This was done mainly using railroads, which were under constant attack by Nazi bombers.
The Soviet workers, including women, challenged the harsh conditions in the Urals, Central Asia and Siberia, building up the new factories. In total, about 2000 new factories were built in the Urals and Siberia during the war years.
Design bureaus and research institutes were moving to the east along with defense plants. They created and tested new military equipment that was to surpass the German.
Thus, during the war years, more than 35,000 IL-2 combat planes, nicknamed the “Black Death,” and more than 60,000 iconic T-34 tanks, which had great maneuverability, reliable armor, and powerful armament, were produced in the east.
This part of the series sheds light on the sacrifices of the workers and volunteers, who had to work for long hours to keep the Red Army well-armed and ensure victory in the war.
