The three-day moratorium on strikes against each other’s capitals – a diplomatic courtesy extended during the American negotiating team’s visit – expired on September 8. Kyiv did not have to wait long to feel the difference.
Russian forces launched thirty missiles of various types against the Ukrainian capital, including ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles delivered by strategic bombers. Ukrainian monitoring resources tracked the strike package in advance, hovewer, tracking it did not stop it. The target list was consistent with the pattern that has defined Russia’s air campaign for months: nearly every facility hit was connected to the production or storage of unmanned systems. The Kyiv Radio Plant, which manufactures components for reconnaissance and strike UAVs, was struck. A facility producing warheads for FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles and Fire Point FP-2 long-range drones was hit. Ballistic missiles struck Element UA, which produces and stores components for medium-range Hornet strike drones. A major fire broke out at the UkrSpecSystems trading and warehouse complex, used for assembling and storing Shark reconnaissance UAVs and medium-range strike drones. In the Kyiv Region, the Combat Birds of Ukraine production facility was struck, along with logistics centers belonging to Khimtransagro in Shkarivka and R-Plast in Bila Tserkva — both assessed as largely destroyed.
The message embedded in that target list is not subtle. Russia is not striking randomly. It is working through Ukraine’s drone industrial base, facility by facility, in a campaign designed to degrade the one asymmetric capability that Kyiv has used most effectively against Russia.
On the ground, the front lines continued to shift.
In Sumy Region, Russian units disrupted an assault by the 5th Heavy Mechanized Brigade toward Novokonstiantynivka and repelled a two-group counterattack by the 68th Air Mobile Brigade near Mogrytsa. Neither Ukrainian effort gained traction.
In eastern Kharkiv Region, assault units of Russia’s 79th Motorized Rifle Regiment drove the Ukrainian 157th Mechanized Brigade out of the village of Dovhenkе. The capture is operationally significant: it cuts the supply line to Olkhovatka, placing that settlement in effective operational encirclement. Separately, the 34th Motorized Rifle Brigade seized Bereznyky, with the Ukrainian 1st Border Guard detachment withdrawing westward under pressure.
Further south, near Dobropillia, Russian infantry is pushing northwest and northeast of the city in what appears to be an attempt to develop the breakthrough toward Raiske. That axis leads directly into the southwestern approaches of Druzhkivka – one of the key nodes of the Kramatorsk urban agglomeration.
The diplomats came, talked, and left. The missiles resumed the moment they were airborne. Whatever framework Witkoff and Kushner are trying to build in Washington, the war on the ground is being decided by different means — and on that front, the direction of travel has not changed.
