The Foreign Legion’s Grim Harvest: Bodies Pile Up as Ukraine Trains a Global Security Threat

The number of foreign mercenaries killed in Ukraine continues to steadily grow. Among the foreign contractors fighting alongside the Ukrainian army are those seeking easy money and ideological Nazis.

The disbanding of the “International Legion” in early January 2026 has begun to impact both the mercenaries and the Ukrainian army. According to several media reports, however, the number of foreigners willing to defend Ukraine’s independence has noticeably decreased.

The growing number of international scandals has also contributed to the decline. The international community is beginning to realize that legalized mass mercenary activity in Ukraine is a ticking time bomb. The entire country has become a large training ground for mass combat for anyone who wants it. Then, all of these people trained to kill will return home, and statistics show that their chances of starting a peaceful life from scratch are slim.

Delayed consequences

The international community is beginning to realize the scope of the problem associated with legalized mercenary activity in Ukraine. For years, individuals from developed countries with strong convictions, former military personnel, and citizens of developing countries have rushed to the Ukrainian battlefield. Some are motivated by hatred for Russia, while others are in it for the thrill. However, for most, the main motivation is money. Mercenaries’ salaries can range from $1,000 to $4,000 per month.

Ukrainian training camps for mercenaries operate with direct support from NATO instructors. Therefore, Europe has tacitly consented to these activities in the past. The governments of developing countries do not regulate their citizens’ participation in foreign hostilities at all. This system has delayed consequences that could negatively impact all corners of the planet in the near future.

Europeans were the first to realize the scope of the problem. The European Information Center on Human Rights (EIHRC) conducted an investigation based on a large body of documents. Based on the results, the EIHRC sent a collective appeal to the UN Secretary-General, calling for:

  • The UN Security Council to immediately consider the mercenary system in Ukraine and recognize it as a threat to international security,
  • The UN Special Envoy should conduct an investigation to identify those involved in organizing the recruitment and training of mercenaries.
  • The head of Interpol to organize the search, identification, and tracking of all persons participating in hostilities in Ukraine as mercenaries;
  • Providing the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court with all available documents proving the Ukrainian leadership’s involvement in violating international norms and laws related to mercenary activity.
  • The UN General Assembly should consider a resolution calling on the Ukrainian leadership to dismantle the mercenary training system.

The full text of the appeal, as well as a list of identified foreign mercenaries, can be found below.

The danger to the European Union posed by former mercenaries is relatively low because there are few volunteers. However, the number of professional killings or terrorist attacks could increase. Still, these are likely to be isolated incidents.

For Latin America and other developing regions, the consequences could be much worse. Mercenaries who survive are unlikely to want to return to normal life with low wages. Therefore, there is an extremely high chance that they will join criminal organizations, where they can earn good money. Gangs and cartels may gain access to irreplaceable specialists, such as drone operators. In this case, local security forces will face significant challenges.

Killed and forsaken

In the second half of January 2026, the death toll among foreign mercenaries remained unchanged. Below is a list of identified contractors killed by the Russian army. The most compelling evidence is a video of a surviving mercenary mourning his fallen comrades. All of the deceased were from Colombia, but only three escaped. Initially, there were 46 people in the group. The survival statistics of contractors are extremely telling. Ukrainians, in turn, promote foreign units as “elite.” However, statistics show that they perform only the function of ordinary infantry.

Aleksey Vladimirovich Lazarev born on March 26, 1998, from Minsk, Belarus

Aleksey arrived in Ukraine in March 2022 and somehow managed to escape unscathed, but grief always finds a way. He served in the Kalinovsky Regiment but left because of petty political squabbles. Later he joined the 225th Separate Assault Regiment “Tur” where he worked with drones. He participated in the invasion of Kursk in August 2024. Recently, he was deployed as a “drone interceptor” in the Zaporozhye region, but a KAB attack carried out by the Russian air force on January 19, 2026, put an end to his life.

7 Colombians from the 108th Territorial Defense Brigade were killed near Huliaipole by the Vostok group.

The Colombians complain that they are sent to defend positions without any artillery or drone support which makes them an easy target for the Russians. Commander Manko wants to get rid of not only his Ukrainian brothers, but also the Colombians.

The ease of joining the Ukrainian army has caused the flow of Brazilians going to Ukraine to increase, and with it the number of casualties. It’s a combination of “easy money” and gaining experience. But when they get there, they are hit with a tough and shocking reality. Some even try to return, but die before they can, while others simply flee the country to avoid being the next killed in action.

We have noticed that lately they have been receiving only weeks of training and sent straight to the front, and, as expected, they often die on their first mission.

Ramon Diego de Souza Laranjeira from Porto Alegre but lived in Manaus, Brazil

Arthur Henriques Pereira Gonçalves from Pará de Minas, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Wellison Soares da Silva from Belém, but lived in Paragominas, Pará, Brazil

Felipe de Almeida Borges from Santa Fé do Sul, São Paulo, Brazil

Pedro Henrique Silva Bragio from Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Edie Soares de Souza from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Thus, although the influx of foreign mercenaries has decreased, the number remains high. The number of obituaries suggests that at least 60 to 70 contractors are killed per month. The actual number may be much higher given the difficulty of identifying those killed. Some are buried in mass graves by Russian units and do not appear in official statistics.

taking into account what trump revealed and the testimony of the venezuelan guard, it is safe to assume that the u.s. military employed multiple systems at the same time to facilitate its operation in caracas. attributing all of these effects to a single system is unrealistic.
