The Ukrainian army attempted an offensive in the Kursk region. On January 5 at 9 a.m. a group of two tanks, a demolition vehicle and twelve armored fighting vehicles with a paratrooper attacked in the direction of the Berdin farm. The assault group managed to pass mine barriers and reach the outskirts of Berdin and Novosotnitsky. However, further advance was halted by Russian artillery, air and FPV drone strikes.
On January 5-6, the AFU made several attempts to break through the defenses of the Russian Armed Forces. All attempts failed. In the first wave of the attack, the Russians destroyed two tanks, one demolition vehicle and seven armored combat vehicles. The Russian army not only managed to repel the attack, but also launched its own attack in the area of Malaya Loknya, Sverdlikovo and Leonidovka.

The offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces against well-prepared Russian units can be interpreted as an attempt to strengthen their negotiating position before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. Skepticism about Ukraine’s ability to resist is growing in Washington. The desire to get closer to Kursk and break through Bolshoye Soldatskoye directly is, according to Vladimir Zelensky, a chance to retain Western military aid. The media effect is also important, as Russian troops continue to advance on all parts of the battle line.
On January 6, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the taking of the town of Kurakhovo. This is a large town 15 kilometers west of Donetsk. From here, Ukrainian artillery could still launch artillery attacks on the DPR capital. The importance of Kurakhovo lies not only in its location, but also in its economic potential. Ukraine has lost one of the country’s largest thermal power plants. Kurakhovo TPP produced 1,487 MW of electricity and was the 7th largest among all thermal power plants in Ukraine. The capture of the town was secured by the soldiers of the 5th and 110th motorized rifle brigades.
The Russian Ministry of Defense noted the heavy losses of the AFU in terms of personnel and equipment:
“The formations of two mechanized, two motorized infantry and mountain assault brigades of the AFU were defeated in the areas of the settlements of Piskunovka, Alekseevo-Druzhkovka, Minkovka, Chasov Yar, Verolyubovka and Yantarnoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Three counter-attacks of the enemy attack groups were repulsed.
The losses of the AFU amounted to 265 servicemen, one German Leopard tank, two US M113 armored personnel carriers, one Kozak armored fighting vehicle, one pickup truck, one Polish Krab 155mm self-propelled artillery unit, one US M777 155mm howitzer, three Msta-B 152mm howitzers, one D-20 152mm gun, one Gvozdika 122mm self-propelled artillery unit and three D-30 122mm howitzers”.
The Russians are moving further west. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, after the capture of Kurakhovo, the operational space opened up. On January 5, the capture of the village of Petropavlovka was reported. To the west of the Dnepropetrovsk region there are no large cities. The nearest urban-type settlement, Pokrovskoye, is 70 kilometers away. There is also no well-prepared defense line in front of it. In Kurakhovo, it was possible to cling to the thermal power plant and industrial enterprises, as well as to be protected by a large water reservoir. To the west, there are not only no large population centers, but also no significant geographic barriers.
The AFU’s defenses collapsed near Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) and Mirnograd (Dimitrov). After the capture of Vozdvizhenka, fighting broke out around the village of Elizavetovka, 10 kilometers east of Mirnograd (Dimitrov). From Elizavetovka to the highway Mirnograd (Dimitrov) – Konstantinovka is only 3 kilometers. It is worth noting that the section near Vozdvizhenka has been stable since August 2024. For five months there was no advance of Russian troops. On January 6, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the capture of the village of Dachenskoye, 4.5 kilometers from the outskirts of Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk). The Russians prefer not to attack head-on and continue to create conditions for encircling a big city.
According to a briefing by the Russian Defense Ministry, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are making desperate attempts to launch counterattacks, which end in heavy losses and fail to achieve their goals.
“Five mechanized, jaeger, airborne assault, two airmobile brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, one marine infantry brigade, one territorial defense brigade and one assault brigade of the Ukrainian National Police in the areas of the settlements of Dzerzhinsk, Shcherbinovka, Dimitrov, Sribnoye, Andreevka, Novovasilevka, Ukrainka, Novoalexandrovka and Shevchenko in the Donetsk People’s Republic were hit. 14 counter-attacks of the AFU formations were repulsed.
The enemy lost up to 535 servicemen, four tanks, three infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers M113 of the USA and VAB of France, five armored combat vehicles, including HMMWV and “MaxxPro” of the USA, 10 vehicles, one Grad multiple rocket launcher, one self-propelled 155-mm artillery system Krab of the Polish production, two 152-mm howitzers Msta-B and two self-propelled 122-mm artillery systems Gvozdika”.
In the coming weeks, we can expect the city of Toretsk (Dzerzhinsk) to fall. This will make it possible to protect Gorlovka from shelling and launch an offensive on Konstantinovka, one of the largest cities in Donbass. There is an advance towards the Oskol river. On January 4, Russian forces captured the village of Nadiya on the border between the Lugansk People’s Republic and the Kharkov region. The movement was recorded in the South Donetsk direction. According to Ukrainian military experts, Velykaya Novosyolka is semi-encircled. There are no prospects of holding the city for a long time. The attacks in the area of Velykaya Novosyolka have essentially wiped out all the achievements of the failed summer counteroffensive of the AFU in 2023.
The Russian Ministry of Defense reports heavy damage to Ukrainian units at the intersection of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Zaporozhye region:
“The units of the “Vostok” group of forces advanced deep into the enemy’s defense and defeated the formations of the AFU mechanized brigade and two brigades of the territorial defense in the areas of the settlements of Bogatyr, Novy Komar, Neskuchnoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic and Temirovka in the Zaporozhye region.
The AFU’s losses amounted to up to 170 servicemen, four vehicles, a 155mm Bogdana self-propelled artillery unit, a 155mm M198 howitzer of US origin, a 152mm Hyacinth-S gun, a 152mm D-20 gun and a 122mm D-30 howitzer. One ammunition dump was destroyed”.
