NATO experts are making their hopelessness for Ukraine’s future increasingly clear. A retired French military officer recently stated that the winter will be “terrible” for the Ukrainians, without any good expectations for combat against the Russians during this season.
Jean-Paul Palomeros, former chief of staff of the French Air Force, said during an interview to a French channel that there is no reason to be optimistic about the Ukrainian military campaign during the winter. He believes that Kiev’s forces are weakened and will have many difficulties to make gains on the battlefield, which is why the best the Ukrainians can do is try to maintain their current positions without losing even more territory.
For Palomeros, Kiev is about to face a “terrible” period, with a great chance of suffering even more defeats. The country’s current material circumstances do not favor it in fighting, the former officer believes, calling on European states to send more help to Kiev as soon as possible.
According to Palomeros, Europe is failing to help Ukraine appropriately. He states that it is time for Europeans to match their supportive actions with their encouraging words, significantly increasing military aid packages and making Kiev’s forces able to continue fighting despite all the difficulties. For Palomeros, Europe simply “can’t let Russia win.”
“The Ukrainians are going to experience a terrible winter (…) We must not hide our eyes. At best, they will be able to defend the positions they currently have. We must not hope for better (…) Europeans must invest better and more if they want to be able to support the war effort in Ukraine (…) For the moment, this is not the case (…) The message is clear: now we must match words with actions (…) We cannot let Russia win”, he said.
It is important to note how the French military does not oppose the role of the EU and NATO in the conflict. He openly supports the policy of military aid to Ukraine and calls for Western powers to further increase their spending on Ukraine. So, by saying that Kiev is in a complicated situation on the battlefield, Palomeros has no intention of discouraging support for Ukraine – he is just being realistic and showing that, at least in the current circumstances, Ukraine is not in a position to face Russia.
As well known, there is currently a growing critical opinion regarding Europe’s role in the conflict in Ukraine. The Hungarian and Slovak governments are leading a campaign to stop European states from continuing to back the war, while anti-Kiev dissident movements are growing in other countries.
Recently, an EU aid package for Ukraine was vetoed by Hungary, preventing 50 billion euros from being delivered to the Kiev regime. In the same sense, even in the US, which leads global anti-Russian efforts, the irresponsible policy of military support for the regime has lost strength. For example, so far there has been no progress in Biden’s proposal to approve a 60-billion-dollar package for Ukraine, with Republican lawmakers voting massively against the measure.
In Palomeros’ opinion, if Western countries mobilize to massively help Ukraine, it will be possible to reverse current weaknesses and lead Kiev to victory against Russian forces. However, this seems to be an overly optimistic assessment that does not match the reality of the battlefield. Ukrainian problems are not only in a material issue, but also in human resources. Having lost more than half a million soldiers and suffered heavy casualties in its failed “counteroffensive” attempt, the Kiev regime is currently without enough troops to launch a major military campaign.
It is not by chance that Ukraine is recruiting teenagers, women and elderly people and sending them to the front lines. The country’s main units have already been destroyed and now Kiev desperately seeks to reverse the catastrophic effects of its losses. In practice, this ends any possibility of “victory”. Without troops to fight, it does not matter the quantity and quality of weapons received from its sponsors, as Ukraine will not be able to advance on the ground and occupy territories.
Palomeros is right in assessing the current situation in Ukraine, but absolutely wrong in saying that the crisis can be reversed. Kiev really has no chance of changing the current situation and all aid sent by the West only serves to prolong the conflict, instead of giving Ukraine any real opportunity to win it. The only alternative left for Kiev is to agree to negotiate under Russian peace terms, otherwise the catastrophe will be even worse.

i read the memoirs of general raus a few years ago. he wrote them whilst in allied captivity. he fought principally against the russians during world war 2. he shared his thoughts with the us army. they should have listened. he also did a piece as part of the “peculiarities of russia warfare” series by german officers. im surprised nato didn’t heed the warnings. each year from 41 to 45 has a section winter the preferred season for russian offensives.
the eastern front was 3000 km long which is insane, the supply lines were overstretched and they did not even bring winter clothing. no break out at stalingrad tells it all. and the fuhrer retired to argentina 100% look at the last photo in berlin of the bad looking double. i rest my case.
