The BMPT-72 or “Terminator 2” tank support combat vehicle is designed and manufactured by the Russian company Uralvagonzavod for supporting tanks and other armoured combat vehicles in urban areas.
The vehicle is based on the chassis of the Russian-made main battle tank T-72 and capable of destroying infantry vehicles, tanks and other armoured targets.
The “Terminator 2” was launched at the Russian Arms Expo (RAE) exhibition in Russia’s Nizhny Tagil in September 2013.
looks like they took the Shilka concept and applied it to a T-72. not bad, though i personally would prefer a Gattling gun instead of two 30 mm.
and now, since you dont have a loader and a gunner, you can operate the whole thing remotely as a drone, and then you can also apply more operators constantly monitoring one part of it’s surrounding, increasing detection potential.
A dozen of these would have been very beneficial in Palmyra. The 30MM guns engaging ISIS utility vehicles and outranging their weapons, and the ATGMs taking out tanks and possible MRLS. It would have been a spectacle seeing ISIS infantry trying to infiltrate Palmyra against 30 MM steel curtain. I think each vehicle can hold at least 200 rounds per gun, altogether these vehicles could have expanded 4800 rounds at ISIS causing some serious carnage.
Armored tractors with people willing to fight would have been more then sufficient in Palmira. Syria is clear example that people not the hardware fights and wins battles. Having said that, this animal would have been beneficial in Aleppo therse past few years. Also it may change the whole concept of armored warfare in the future. It may replace BMP’s with infantry in direct support of MBT’s since these are highly vulnerable to RPGs and ATGMs. I’m afraid that in near future we’ll be forced to see these concepts in action on battlefield “near you”.
I agree to a certain extent with your statements, yes, people with proper motivation and good hardware fight and win battles in Syria.
I see this weapon as a supplement to the BMP, since you need infantry to secure and maintain armored penetrations and advances.
Very impressive vehicle. Excellent combination of automatic cannon and ATGWs. Use of the T-72 chassis is also a plus in terms of spare parts.
