On November 22, Turkey Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli said at the Turkish defense ministry’s budget talks in Ankara that the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) is a “serious danger” to Turkey, Reuters has reported.
The minister revealed that the Turkey Army established its third observation post in Syria’s Idlib governorate west of the YPG-held city of Afrin, according to the Turkish Daily Sabah newspaper .
“The PKK/YPG and Daesh [ISIS] are a threat to Turkey, and [their locations] are a target for us. Within this context, let there be no doubt that we will use our right(s) arising from international law,” Canikli said during the budget talks according to Daily Sabah.
Meanwhile, Syrian opposition sources reported that a new convoy of the Turkish Army entered the northern Idlib countryside on November 22. The new force will likely be deployed near the three observation posts of the Turkish Army west of Afrin.
From its side, the YPG held a military parade in the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) areas in eastern Syria on November 21 to “support Afrin city”, according to the YPG official website. During the parade, the YPG showed Humvee and Guardian armoured vehicles supplied by the US.
“If they think only Afrin will fight to defend the region, that’s wrong … they better take everything into consideration before trying any attack against Afrin … If they make such a mistake, they will be countered by all the people of northern Syria and Rojava along with all the components of SDF, including YPG and YPJ [Women’s Protection Units],” one of the YPG leaders who participated in the military parade said.
According to Syrian sources, the Turkish military operation against the YPG in Afrin city could be closer than what some expected. On November 22, the Syrian Kurdish Hawar News Agency (ANHA) reported that Turkish warplanes and UAVs are flying around the hour over Afrin. ANHA also said that strange movements were noticed by locals north of Afrin city along the border with Turkey.
Turkey may attack Afrin after ISIS is defeated in Syria to avoid any criticism from the US or any other side. With the Turkish Army besieging Afrin from northern, western and easter sides and the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) controlling the southern side, the YPG will face significant problems in defending its positions in eastern Syria without a diplomatic and military assistance from the Syrian-Iranian-Russian alliance.
Some Kurdish source claim that defending Afrin is possible like in Kobani city. However, it seems that everyone is forgetting that the YPG had the support of the US-led coalition warplanes and a supply line that run through Turkey during the Kobani battle against ISIS.
In retrospect it might look like quite a shrewd move by the Syrians to not fight the Turkish invasion when they were busy with the US head-chopping, heart-eating rapers. The Syrians might be able to manoeuvre the Turks and Kurds into doing their fighting for them….;O)
I remember discussing with you a few months ago Attrition, the merits of patience in war when ones resources are stretched and limited as indeed the SAA and allied formations are.
To be successful on such conflicts against a plethora of different terror gangs and their backers one must remain focused on what is ‘doable’ at the time and attempt to contain what is not.
Instant gratification is only a luxury for the most powerful but as we see after 16 years of the US and NATO in Afghanistan for instance, such gratification is still not certain when the Genie of War is released from the bottle.
This could mean two things; either Turkey are truly on the side of good and part of the Syrian / Russian alliance or it is a land grab with the backing somehow of the Yanks.
I shall be hoping and praying for the former.
I don’t think Turkey is on the side of Good. At least not Erdogan, who’s soul is blacker then a tar pit. And I don’t think its a land grab with US backing either, because the US is doing that already with the Kurds themselves. To have the Turks move against their allies seems counter to US intentions.
I prefer if Erdogan, if he wants to move against the YPG, moves against the Rojava Kurds, as they are the ones causing all the problems. As I’ve said before the Afrin Kurds are no problem, and form a useful buffer between Turkish occupied Northern Syria and Al Qaida occupied Idlib.
Thinking that Turkey is “on the side of good” is child-level naivety. However the SDF are also on the side of evil, so this would basically be a battle between 2 different entities of evil.
You could be right, however it is so confusing regards Syria; I shall wait a while.
These Yank lapdogs need to Stay
In afrin for now. If the turkish army takes
Control over the Canton we see IT being
by the FSA as their Main supplyline to
Their forces witch was cutt of by the SAA
And the ypg back in early 2016
Come ON you cowards! If they do half as much fighting as they do talking and posturing they will have a bloodbath. But instead they just talk for like a year and a half about attacking Kurds over there… Both are cowardly gangs.
The Islamic State of Turkey and Syria (ISTS) versus the Kurdish State of Turkey and Syria (KSTS)!!! BRING IT ON!!
Indeed !
A conflict with Turkey and the US would bring a wry smile to my face :)
will neve happen…Tayip is America’s bitch
Time will tell on that think.
Turkey has been dealing to lighting with terrorist for 50 years now. It is time for the Turks to deal to the Kurd’s what the SAA dealt to ISIS.
Deliver the finishing blow and liberate all of the land from their terrorist organisations.
Stupid Kurd’s what they think, that the US war planes will help them as Kobani, that’s why they said Kobani was easy haha. What they have now is 3 tanks and 20-30 Humvee lol. Turkey is not Daesh, they will be air campaign that will level them to the ground, poor stupid kurdish idiots they think they can go against professional army. LOL idiot’s you are PKK terrorists soon even Syria’s government will start bombing you idiots. Syria will not leave Raqqa and all that part that you stole in mid war crisis. But let them be let them think they can do something… When casualties will start pouring they will run like rabbits.
Kobanî wasn’t easy at all n’ he US-coalition just “help” at the very end. But agree 100%with You in this all Situation n’ Scenario at this moment, more with Israel “Helping them also” , The Kurd’s “bited” n’aren’t aware that it’s similar with the Palestinian Authority, just pawns n’ slaves in the game of the Zionists n’ they Agenda. It’s all in the Protocols as is in the Holy Quran, Holy Bible n’other Holy n’ Sacred or Secret Books. With Full Respect!! Ⓐ
According to this statement on the article “Some Kurdish source claim that defending Afrin is possible like in Kobani city. However, it seems that everyone is forgetting that the YPG had the support of the US-led coalition warplanes and a supply line that run through Turkey during the Kobanî battle against ISIS.” I can say it’s fake. I was there fighting with the Kurdish against ISIS to liberate Kobanî n’ the Rojava enclave n’ can assure you all that We didn’t had no support at all from the US-led coalition. Just after the Kurdish delegation went to Washington “things” changed a bit n’ just at the real end they gave us a little “help”, because we haven’t plains to air raid them, (Also we faced the Turkish who were helping openly ISIS.) but that was just for “mass manipulation n’ propaganda”, my Life, Blood n’ Word on My Statement. Went to Syria with the “help of the DAF”, wasn’t in the International Battalion or IPG, but our missions most of the time were to Support IPJ n’ with our training n’ skills was all about night raids against ISIS positions n’ more… Ⓐ
