On October 12, the Taliban announced that its fighters killed 29 Afghan soldiers during an attack on two checkpoints of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and the Afghan National Police (ANP) in the district of Schinke in the southern province of Zabul.
Following the attack, a force of the ANA and the ANP attempted to recapture the two checkpoints. However, Taliban fighters ambushed the force and destroyed four armored personnel carriers (APCs) with rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank mines, according to the Taliban news agency Voice of Jihad.
Since the beginning of October, the Taliban has launched more than five attacks on Afghan government forces in the districts of Schinke, Mizana and Naw Bahar in Zabul. Dozens of Afghan soldiers were reportedly killed and injured as a result of these attacks.
The Afghan group is likely trying to expand its control in the southern part of Afghanistan in order to secure its smuggling routes along the border with Pakistan.
