The night of April 16-17 saw another wave of intense cross-border strikes as both Russian and Ukrainian forces launched attacks deep into each other’s territories, targeting military installations, logistics hubs, and industrial infrastructure.
Russian Strikes on Ukrainian Military Targets
The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in total, two Iskander-M missiles, three S-300/400 missiles and 75 UAVs were allegedly launched by the Russian military during the night. Ukrainian air defense managed to intercept only 25 attack drones, 30 decoy UAVs allegedly disappeared. The Ukrainian military confirmed damage in the DPR, Kharkiv, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk regions.
The Russian military continues successfully implementing the tactics of concentrated strikes on one of Ukrainian industrial cities, leaving Ukrainian air defense no chance to repel the attack.
Last night, the city of Dnipro was one of the main targets of the massive attack. Russian UAVs began pounding targets in the city on the evening of April 16th. At least a dozen explosions thundered. Numerous fires were filmed in the city.
The town of Izyum in the Kharkiv region came under one of the largest Russian attacks since the beginning of the Russian Special Military Operation. Dozens of explosions were reported as a result of Russian drone and missile strikes, including presumably Iskander-M missiles. According to preliminary reports, Russian missiles destroyed the area of accumulation of the military personnel, which resulted in heavy losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
In Sumy, situated just 25 kilometers from the advanced Russian positions, at least ten explosions reportedly rocked the city, striking troop deployment points and military logistics hubs. The attacks appeared aimed at disrupting Ukrainian efforts to reinforce border areas.
Ukrainian Drone Strikes in Russia
On the Ukrainian side, drone strikes continue penetrating deep into Russian territory. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that in total, 71 Ukrainian drones were destroyed in six rear regions, including:
- 49 UAVs in the Kursk region;
- 7 UAVs in the Oryol region;
- 7 UAVs in the Ryazan region;
- 4 UAVs in the Bryansk region;
- 3 UAVs in the Bladimir region;
- 1 UAV in the Tula region.
For the second consecutive night, Ukrainian drones attacked the town of Shuya located about 700 kilometers from front in Ivanovo region. LINK Footage from the town confirmed drone strikes and damage. The strikes were again carried out using “Liutyi” unguided drones, capable of reaching distances up to 1,000 km while carrying a 50 kg explosive payload. Local sources reported three explosions last night. According to local reports the targets could be the 112th Guards Missile Brigade deployed in the area. Yesterday, the drones reportedly targeted military barracks or headquarters, and today there were strikes on hangars, warehouses with military equipment.
These attacks highlight Ukraine’s increasing use of long-range drones to disrupt Russian rear areas, including military bases and logistics networks.
On April 18th, the moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure ends ignored by the Ukrainian military. There are growing concerns that Russia may resume large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, as seen in previous months. Meanwhile, Ukraine continues its asymmetric warfare campaign, striking deep into Russia to offset Moscow’s battlefield advantages.
