Syrian War Report – January 26, 2017: Heavy Infighting In Militant-Held Idlib

A top Ahrar Al-Sham member, the Military commander of Umar Al-Mukhtar Brigade, Mohamad Kakel was killed by the Syrian army in the Wadi Barada area near Damascus.

Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) and Ahrar al-Sham continued to clash in the province of Idlib. Recently, Jabhat Fatah al-Sham seized the prison in the city of Idlib and 2 check points belonging to Ahrar al-Sham and its allies. An intense fighting was also reported in Ariha.

As a result, Suqur al-Sham, an Idlib branch of Jaish al-Islam, Jaish al-Mujahideen, Fastaqem Union and Sham Front were defeated by Jabhat Fatah al-Sham and their vestiges merged with Ahrar al-Sham.

ISIS regained control over Seflaniye from Turkish forces near al-Bab. At least 1 Turkish soldier was killed and 5 were wounded as result of clashes. Meanwhile, the Syrian army took control of Mushayrafa.

On January 25, government forces retook from ISIS terrorists the village of Bir al-Fawairah south of the government-held Tiyas Airbase in the province of Homs. On January 26, the government advance was developed in the direction of Bayt Jarbu Alazw. Clashes were also reported near Al-Baydah Al-Sharqiyah.

On January 25, Six Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bombers have once again hit ISIS targets in the province of Deir Ezzor, destroying two control centres, ammunition storages, armament and military hardware belonging to the terrorist group. This was the fourth time in 5 days when the Russian strategic bombers targeted ISIS terrorists in the area of Deir Ezzor.
