Syrian security forces have uncovered a large ISIS weapons cache in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Arab News Agency reported on December 15.

The state-run agency said that the cache was found in the course of an ongoing combing operation that is meant to fully secure the region.

The cache contained dozens of assault and sniper rifles, heavy machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades, mortars, anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), several commercial drones, ammunition of different calibers as well as medical supplies, propaganda materials and different military equipment.

Some of the weapons found in the large cache were of Western origins, including at least one French-made MILAN ATGM.

ISIS direct presence in Deir Ezzor came to an end in 2019 following a series of intense battles with the Syrian Arab Army and its allies, including the Russian military, on the western bank of the Euphrates River and with the U.S.-led coalition and its proxy, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, on the river’s eastern bank.

To this day, the terrorist group continues to maintain a strong influence in Deir Ezzor, especially in the southeastern countryside which is held by the U.S.-led coalition.
