Syrian and Russian strikes have killed more than 630 terrorists in the northwestern region of Greater Idlib since the October 5 drone attack on the Military Academy near the central city of Homs, Rear Admiral Vadim Kulit, deputy head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria, announced on November 7.
The attack on the Military Academy claimed the lives of 89 service members and civilians, who were there to attend the graduation ceremony, and left more than 277 other wounded. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the drone attack.
However, evidence indicates that al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the de-facto ruler of Greater Idlib, or one of its allies was responsible.
Speaking during a press conference in the Syrian capital, Damascus, alongside the director of the Political Department of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), Major General Hassan Suleiman, Kulit said that joint Syrian-Russian retaliatory operations included more than 230 airstrikes by the Russian air force and more than 900 artillery missions by the joint forces on terrorists’ positions in Greater Idlib.
Sulemian noted that the targeted positions belonged to HTS, the Turkistan Islamic Party and other terrorist groups in the region.
The operations killed more than 630 “terrorists,” including 34 leaders and 15 foreign experts, and injured 450 others, Kulit said.
According to the Russian military official, 1,125 targets of the terrorists, including observation sites, headquarters, tunnels, underground weapon depots, 153 vehicles and other equipment, were destroyed.
“The joint operations between Russian forces and the SAA reduced the combat capabilities of terrorist groups, dispersed their leaders, damaged their morale and forced them to stop their terrorist attacks,” Kulit said.
From his side, Sulemian vowed that “any attack launched by the terrorist groups will receive a devastating and immediate response at any time or place.”
During the press conference, a video with footage from the attack on the Military Academy and others from retaliatory strikes on Greater Idlib was presented.
It’s worth noting that more Syrian and Russian strikes hit Greater Idlib as the conference was being held and in the hours that followed. In a later statement, Kulit said that the strikes were carried out in response to deadly attacks on SAA troops, adding that an underground shelter was hit.
Despite the escalation of HTS and its allies, the ceasefire in Greater Idlib, which was brokered by Russia and Turkey more than three years ago, is still holding up. The SAA and its allies will not likely resume ground operations in the region as this could lead to a confrontation with Turkey, who maintains thousands of troops there.
