The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Russian forces had carried out a series of strikes against militants, including cells of ISIS, in two directions in Syria’s central region, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on April 20.
The joint strikes targeted hideouts and vehicles of the militants in the countryside of Deir Ezzor and near the city of Palmyra in the eastern Homs countryside, the ministry said in a statement, adding that dozens of militants, including commanders from ISIS, were killed.
The strikes came following a series of attacks by ISIS, the most recent of which claimed the lives of at least 21 pro-government fighters near the town of al-Sukhnah close to Palmyra.
In the same statement, the ministry announced that the SAA had also shot down a number of drones over the countryside of Aleppo.
The drones were most likely launched by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allies from the so-called Greater Idlib region, which includes much of Idlib as well as parts from the northern Lattakia countryside, the northwestern Hama countryside and the western countryside of Aleppo.
The ministry also said that the SAA foiled an attack on a checkpoint in the countryside of Daraa, killing and wounding a number of the militants and seizing their weapons. Terrorist groups, including both ISIS and HTS, have been fairly active in the southern governorate.
A video showing the joint strikes on the central region, the wreckage of the drone shot down over Aleppo countryside and the weapons seized after the failed attack in Daraa countryside was published by the ministry.
While terrorist groups continue to launch attacks in different parts of Syria, the situation in the country remains under control.
ISIS insurgency in the central region will not likely end as long as militants continue to receive support from their comrades in areas controlled by the United States and its proxies in the northeastern region and the southeastern area of al-Tanf.
The threat posed by HTS and its allies in Greater Idlib in northwestern Syria will also continue as Turkey is still refusing to pull its troops out from the region.
In Daraa and other parts of the southern region security will not likely improve as long as ISIS and HTS are still present in other parts of the country.
