On February 27, a military engineer of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) was assassinated in the heart of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The engineer, Colonel Ibrahim Ali al-Mohammed, was reportedly killed when an explosive device that was planted under his vehicle went off. The attack took place near al-Mohammed’s house in the southern Damascus neighborhood of Daf al-Shook.

The nature of Col. al-Mohammed’s work with the SAA remains unknown. However, it is possible that he was involved with the Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC), Syria’s leading research and development body.

The center is said to be responsible for the development of advanced weapon systems for the army, including missiles and drones.

The assassination of Col. al-Mohammed came less than ten days after a large-scale Israeli attack on Damascus and its outskirts that claimed the lives of five people, including a military engineer who works for the SSRC. The engineer was identified as Col. Amjad Ahmed Ali.

The main target of the attack, which took place on February 19, was a cultural center in the highly-secured Kafar Sousah neighborhood where Syrian and Iranian officials were reportedly meeting to advance programmes to develop missiles or drones.

No side has claimed responsibility for the assassinations of Col. al-Mohammed, so far. Terrorist groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham carried out similar attacks in Damascus in the past. However, the work of the target and the timing of the assassination suggest that it was orchestrated by Israeli intelligence.
