On November 18, Syrian forces uncovered loads of explosives materials and devices while combing the former hideouts of ISIS cells in the southern part of Daraa city, commonly known as Daraa al-Balad.

Russian-backed local fighters and former rebels launched a security operation to clear Daraa al-Balad from ISIS cells with support from the Syrian military and intelligence on August 31. The operation was successfully concluded on November 15 with the capture of the terrorists’ main stronghold in the city, the al-Sad street.

In the course of the operation, dozens of ISIS terrorists were neutralized. Nevertheless, two of the terrorist group’s local commanders, Mohamad al-Masalmah, “Hafu,” and Muayad Harfouche, “Abu Taja,” were able to escape from Daraa al-Balad.

A Syrian security official said in a statement to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency that many improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found at the house of Abu Taja. IEDs made to be planted under motorcycles, built around gas cylinders and others wired up together to explode in a specific sequence were seized from house.

“Security forces and engineering personnel are continuing their tasks in combing the entire area and dealing with all forms of booby-traps left by the terrorist organization, ISIS, in the al-Sad street,” the unnamed official said.

Syrian forces have already seized loads of weapons, including anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns, and four vehicle-born improvised explosive devices from the al-Sad street.

ISIS presence in Daraa al-Balad was way larger than what was initially thought. Syrian forces will likely continue to hunt down the group’s remaining cells in the governorate until all terrorists, including those who escaped from the city, are neutralized.
