On February 5, the Hajin Military Council (HMC), a unit of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) based in the southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, announced that its fighters apprehended two suicide bombers of ISIS who were planning to carry out a terrorist attack in the town of Diban.

In a statement released a day after the arrest, the HMC revealed that the terrorists are both foreigners. One is from Iraqi, while the other is from Turkmenistan.

Assault rifles, quantities of ammunition, hand grenades and communication systems were found with the terrorists, who were also wearing explosive belts. HMC fighters also seized documents proving that the terrorists were taking shelter in Turkish-occupied areas in northeastern Syria.

ISIS cells have been very active in the SDF-held southeastern countryside of Deir Ezzor. Between February 4 and 6, the terrorists carried out three attacks.

The January 20 ISIS attack on al-Hasakah prison emboldened the group’s cells in the SDF-held parts of northeastern Syria. The attack saw the death of dozes of SDF fighters and the escape of hundreds of terrorists.

ISIS influence in northeastern Syria continues to grow. While the SDF and the US-led coalition have been making at least some efforts to keep the terrorist group away from their areas of interests, like oil and gas fields, Turkish forces have been doing nothing whatsoever.
