The air defenses of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) shot down ten drones over the countryside of Idlib and Aleppo, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on October 30.
In a brief statement, the ministry said that the drones were launched by “armed terrorist groups” with the aim of “attacking army points and the surrounding safe villages and towns.”
Most of Idlib countryside and the western countryside of Aleppo are a part of the so-called Greater Idlib region which is occupied by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The terrorist group was most likely behind the failed drone attack.
Several photos released by the ministry and a video shared by the official Syrian Arab News Agency showed the wreckage of the drones.
Most of the downed drones were commercially-available quadcopters, either armed with small unguided munitions or modified for FPV suicide attacks. Few others were locally-made fixed-wing suicide drones which are usually used in attacks behind the front.
The failed drone attack came amid reports of a plan by HTS to launch a large-scale attack against the Syrian military in order to take advantage of the distraction caused by the ongoing Israeli war on both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.
The SAA and its allies have been taking measures to deter the group. In recent weeks, the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out several waves of strikes against targets in Greater Idlib. The army also deployed some of its elite units along the front with the region.
