Syrian air defenses had shot down nine drones in the directions of Idlib and Lattakia, the Syrian Ministry of Defense announced on September 19.

In a brief statement, the ministry said that the drones attempted to target a number of military posts and nearby civilian areas.

Several photos released by the ministry showed the wreckage of the drones. Most of the drones were quadcopters, either armed with small unguided munitions or modified for FPV suicide attacks. Few others were fixed-wing suicide drones which are usually used in attacks behind the front.

The ministry also released a video showing a quadcopter drone being shot down close to what appears to be a military post.

Most of Idlib governorate and the northern countryside of the governorate of Lattakia are a part of the so-called Greater Idlib region which is ruled by al-Qaeda-affiliated Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The terrorist group was most likely behind the drone attack.

HTS and its allies escalated their attacks in recent weeks amid renewed efforts to renormalize relations between Turkey, who maintains a large force in Greater Idlib, and the Damascus government. These efforts are reportedly being led by Russia with help from Iran and Iraq.

This escalation, which jeopardizes a ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey more than four years ago, appears to be an attempt to sabotage Syrian-Turkish talks.
