The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has repelled a large-scale attack on its newly-captured positions in the strategic town of Kafr Nabudah and its outskirts in the northern Hama countryside.
Fighters of Hay’at Tahrir al-Shame (HTS), the former branch of al-Qaeda in Syria, led the strike force that included Turkish-backed groups from the National Front for Liberation (NFL) and the National Syrian Army (NSA).
In the first hours of the attack, which began in the night of May 21, HTS and its allies stormed the town and captured a key hill near it. However, the Syrian Arab Air Force (SyAAF) and the Russian Aerospace Forces intervened right away, forcing the terrorists to withdraw from town.
Some positions in Kafr Nabudah’s outskirts are reportedly still under the HTS control. However, the SAA is working to recapture them as soon as possible.
According to pro-government sources, dozens of terrorists were killed in the failed attack. More than 10 vehicles were also destroyed.

The attack came after a 72-hour ceasefire, that allowed HTS and its allies to deploy additional forces in northern and northwestern Hama. It remains unclear why the SAA and its allies remain committed to the ceasefire, despite the repeated violations, which included rocket attacks on Russia’s Hmeimim air base.
