On May 23, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Liwa al-Quds repelled a new ISIS attack on their positions west of the city of al-Mayadin in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Liwa al-Quds announced that is fighters had been able to track ISIS members in Faydat Bani Moynia area west of al-Mayadin and had killed at least eight of them.
ISIS carried out a similar attack on SAA positions east of the T-3 station on May 22, in which it killed over twenty soldiers of the SAA and captured thirteen others, according to Syrian pro-government sources. The ISIS-linked news agency Amaq also reported that ISIS fighters destroyed several battle tanks and vehicles of the SAA during the attack.
This new wave of attacks may force the SAA and its allies to resume their military operations against the besieged fighters of ISIS in the Homs desert between the governorates of Homs and Deir Ezzor. Syrian pro-government activists believe that at least 1,500 fighters and commanders of the terrorist group are currently besieged in the desert.
